It's in bad taste, on many levels.

Would it be funny if WalMart made a song to the tune of 'Material Girl' that made fun of people who use food stamps?

Still, I realize they're just having fun, and wouldn't take it personally (though I could see how some of the professionals at BenTaub would), and I could see how some patients would. I do think it kinda puts them in a light that is not exactly beneficial to their image, especially in this day and age. Probably was not the best idea ever, but it was funny in parts.

Lulac acting like it's an affront to Latinos is of course over the top. I mean, yes, they're referenced, but it's barely part of it. They are no more targeted than others that are poked fun at. I see they tried to water their complaint down a bit to include others, but they seem to think it's mostly about them or something? Come on, let's just say it was in bad taste and move on, it's not like it's some social commentary on the basis of race or something. Economic status, yes... race, not so much.

That song is so absolutely terrible though, I can't give them a pass... especially for letting it drag on so long.

Thanks; I wasn't aware of that particular angle.

I still think it reads charitably, even given that, though. The person without insurance can only afford medical care in an underfunded teaching facility / by doctors-in-training. But (after previous lyrics complain about the clientele/situation), the lyric seems to read that they should come on down anyway, that the doctors at Ben Taub are, in fact, "damn good," and that they'll provide the best care despite the circumstances (even if they don't personally identify with their patients' social standing/like them).

It's a 2-year old YouTube video of some med students blowing off steam. How is this even news-worthy?

Most doctors have twisted senses of humor. It's their way of dealing with the things they see on a daily basis.

Seriously, there are worse things in the world than someone being offended. I'm pretty sure no one has ever died from it...

You shouldn't be ridiculed for being poor or not having insurance. However, if you had a 3rd child at 18, or got hurt driving under the influence you should be ridiculed.

Ben Taub isn't bad at all, but it is the only place people without insurance can go. The emergency room is packed damn near 24/7 with a lot of non emergencies, that's what they're poking fun at.

It's not racist, it's not offensive but it's opposite of what patients long to see from their doctors.

nice healthcare professionals. no... we're not offending you. you're just too sensitive. they bust their arse in schooling to be called "professionals". they certainly get paid enough to act like professionals. is it too much to ask to be professional?

Geez, these people who say it isn't offensive and it's comical. I can guarantee you that if they made a reference to African-Americans and watermelons, it wouldn't be that much of a joke to a few more members. Not only that, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton wouldn't take it as a joke either.

I would be offended if they talked about Asians and introduced japanese into the text and made a parody out of it. People can't say it isn't offensive until it's directed them and hits them where it hits home.

Although it was classless, and in poor taste, people really should lighten up. Should they have used better discretion? Absolutely, but I'm guessing they figured everybody in that audience understood where they were coming from. Several of my best friends are residents, a few of them even attended BCM, and this mentality of "It's not offensive because it's what we deal with everyday" is pretty prevalent amongst the medical community. It doesn't make it right, but I can understand why something like this exists. The medical community is like a bubble where everything you say and do is insulated from the everyday world. They are so immersed in their own daily grind that they are completely removed from regular people. I can't begin to tell you how much people I've known for years and years changed once they entered the medical community. It's just the way things are there, I suppose.

Go eat a d!ck, what do you know about what they go through to become health care professionals? And the people in the video don't get paid squat, they are burying themselves in debt to pursue their career.

wow. first time i've used the report button.

two questions. 1. do you you think the folks in the video consider themselves professionals? 2. do you consider their actions professional?

if i recall my recollection correctly, i don't see anywhere in this thread claiming to be a healthcare professional. maybe they should have considered the consequences of "burying themselves in debt to pursue their career"? is that logical? or should i go eat a penis? don't a lot of people bury themselves in debt to pursue their respective careers? what makes these people so special that they should make their ridicule of clientele public knowledge?

    have any answers?

What?? Did you even read what you wrote??

    1. The folks in the video are med students, making them professionals (weren't you just calling them professional?)
    2. What makes you so special to speak so condescendingly of them? I pointed out the debt thing to emphasize how hard working and dedicated they are to what they are doing, and to mock the fact that you said "we're paying them so much dur dur dur". You aren't paying them anything. There are your answers.
    3. The offer to go chomp down on some man meat was just a suggestion, please don't report me :( :( . Its a delicacy in many countries if i recall my recollection correctly.
