lol was gonna log on to say basically the same thing. while there is some PC rhetoric that boarders on absurd, in this case people just dont get it (including this espn writer (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/commentary/news/story?id=6345168).

what if a white superstar dropped the n-bomb on a white ref? point being you can't divorce the context in which a word has been used to historically disparage a group of people with the 'intention' in which the word is used. this applies to the n-bomb and the f-bomb.

I say, "Your argument is sh-t."

But, you think to yourself, "My argument is not literally a pile of feces."

"Sh-t," in this instance is a signifier of something bad, undesirable. If the referee is not actually a homosexual, he is still being referred to with a derogatory signifier of a lower/weaker social class, i.e. something bad, undesirable.

So, no, it doesn't make it better that the referee is (presumably) not himself a homosexual. It makes it worse, because it's reinforcing the stereotype of homosexuals as low/weak/undesirable people.

    Your argument is sh-t.

One thing if he said it at a press conference, another if he was randomly caught saying it. Maybe we should implant chips into everyone's bodies to make sure they never say or think anything bad of another group.

Randomly caught? He said it at the workplace, during a live game, directed towards another league employee. This isn't some recreation league. Standards are supposed to be in place.

I didn't even know Bennie was gay. Who knows? Maybe this kind of rage actually turned Bennie on.

Anyway, who cares if he lashed out a few words. It's the truth. I thought Gays are supposed to be proud of who they are. Guess not.

something "similarly innocuous" like the aforementioned "n****r"? is that what you mean? care to explain? what are some other examples of what you deem innocuous, since it's all about what you think.

hasty generalization much? don't include me in your flawed logic.

apollo, you never did answer dback's quote above.

better yet... how about growing the hell up, boy.

Yes he was randomly caught. If the camera was not zoomed on him this would not even be a story.

Obviously the fact that many on this board have an apparently problem with homosexuals is what is behind the defense of Kobe's use of the word.

"Gays are supposed to be proud of who they are." What does that mean exactly? They are supposed to be proud to be insulted? Should black people be proud to be told to "pick cotton" or "shine my shoes?"

I shouldn't be surprised to find a board full of homophobes though considering this same board has defended rape.

If I got "randomly caught" sexually harassing someone at my office could I just say "ah geez, what, we gonna put a camera on everyone now?"

Guess what Shaud, getting "caught" doesn't happen "randomly." It only happens when you do things you shouldn't.

Difference is people sexually harassing people in your office isn't a normal thing.

Bad language by NBA players is normal and the only reason Kobe got fined was because he was caught on camera saying it. If the camera was not on him we wouldn't even know about it.

If the NBA don't want kids seeing language like that then they should tell the cameraman don't follow a certain player to the bench for a closeup while he is obviously throwing a temper tantrum.

Lots of things are also said in an office environment that wouldn't go over so well with clients if they heard you say them.

People say lots of things they shouldn't when they think no one will hear them. And then when they get caught, there are repercussions.
