I am a basketball fan primarily, followed by football. I watch baseball during the early fall only. I was reading some article last night that informed that the CBA for MLB was also up after this year. I expect there to be resolutions in the NBA and NFL that ultimately amount to no regular season games missed. However, I also thought that we would be further along in the negotiations in both sports at this point. So I am starting to wonder, especially about the NFL. I also absolutely dread an NBA offseason that is devoid of summer league games. How will you feel as a sports fan (consumer-wise) if we end up missing chunks of regular seasons in all three of the big sports? To me, that is obviously unprecented but also could really kill the fact that at least the NBA and NFL are doing extremely well right now. What would America, with its TV, espn.com, twitter and youtube possibly do if there is a meltdown with professional sports. My suggestion... Professional Beer Pong replaces baseball.
Football matters to me more than any sport, but I guess I'll have more time to read books or watch movies.
I'd love to say, "THOSE SPOILED BASTARDS! I'LL NEVER WATCH ANOTHER GAME IF THEY STRIKE/LOCKOUT, ETC!!!!" But, ultimately, I'm lazy and I'll be watching games as I do now. I live in Austin so it's not like me not attending games would have any effect on anyone. I'll be pissed more for not being able to watch than anything they're actually fighting over.
College Football, College Basketball and Futbol would take up my sports fix and family, movies and books would finish off the rest....plenty to pick up the slack. Saying that, a part of me would die everyday until the big three came back.
I have heard some people say that along with their friends they won't be watching football once the lockout ends. Count me in the group that will watch basketball and football like nothing happened.
I've been trying to avoid the realization that there might not be NFL or NBA til 2012. I'll cross that bridge when I get there. College football can only do so much...
I wouldn't worry about MLB. There's almost a zero percent chance of a lockout in baseball as the players and the owners are pretty much happy with the deal as is.
NFL will come back, the owners just need to save face after the players slapped them back so hard. NBA....don't get your hopes up. That one is going to be long and ugly.
Agree in general. The NFL will play its season. Either the judge will strikedown the lockout or once it is upheld the players will be bent over the barrel and forced to say they like it. The NBA on the other hand...
Lockouts over millions of dollars isn't going to sit well with the general public. I think they will work something out on both fronts, because both sides stand to lose if they don't. I reserve the right to be wrong.
True, with Selig stepping down, I'm sure he could teach the NFL and NBA a few things about ways to bring disgruntled fans back.
+1 mate. Currently I mainly watch Premiership, UCL but I might be inclined to jump on La Liga, German, Brazil leagues too.
Good majority of NBA owners literally can't afford to not win massive concessions from the players. Players are going to be asked to give up a crapton of what they've fought for over the years. Unlike the NFL, this isn't just wrestling over who makes more money. If your place of employment hit bad times and asked everyone to accept a 15% paycut and a significant reduction in benefits, I'd bet you and your coworkers would push back hard as well.
With the NBA Summer League on the verge of being canceled, we will see a domino effect with the rest of major sports. I have a feeling this won't end well for the NBA...
