http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2011/04/12/meineke-to-sponsor-texas-bowl-game.html Houston Business Journal - by Barrett Goldsmith Date: Tuesday, April 12, 2011, 2:43pm CDT Meineke Car Care Centers Inc. said Tuesday that the Texas Bowl at Reliant Stadium will be re-christened the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas, after the company signed a three-year sponsorship agreement with a subsidiary of ESPN. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Charlotte, N.C.-based Meineke, whose founder, Sam Meineke, was a native Houstonian, has 10 locations in the area. The game, featuring teams from the Big 12 and the Big 10 conferences, will be aired on a date in December still to be determined on ESPN Regional Television, which owns the rights to the bowl game. It is managed locally by Houston-based Lone Star Sports & Entertainment.
Maybe the bowl game will start gaining more credibility. It's sad that Houston doesn't have a major bowl game, especially considering the market. Nor does it have a huge annual college regular season game. A Texas vs. LSU or Texas A&M vs. LSU should take place in Houston every year.
1) Mack Brown would never do that, too scared... And i don't blame him actually. They play OU in Dallas, that's plenty. 2) Aggies wont' because they play Arky in Dallas every year. 3) LSU won't do that b/c they already play a tough schedule in the SEC. This year however, they are playing Oregon in yet again Dallas. so the really answer is Dallas. Dallas has it all.
one of bill simmons most brilliant columns was on the gallery furniture bowl way back when, he was sent by espn to cover it link
Yep. Houston didn't even try to get any of the games I mentioned. Bob McNair and other city leaders did not try hard enough. Rice vs. Texas every other year is not enough. Jerry Jones did a great job getting college games to his new digs. Bob McNair got squat.
