You are absolutely right. Organized, school sanctioned caning in western countries is so much better :D

I just think it hypocritical for posters who act all chivalrous towards Muslim women after accusing them, their children, their husbands and their religion of being evil terrorists.

For cheating on her husband, did she deserve the punishment she got? NO

But does she deserve the punishment some English schools sanction? why not. if a child gets caning for being "naughty", why not a married wife for being "naughty"

    hmmm.

I have no response. I really didn't expect you to defend the mob rule and beating in front of 200 cheering people. But she was being naughty, i suppose.

Can't I condemn this action without condemning the religion?

Well, it only took a day and a half, but we finally got somebody to half-heartedly defend this.

    QUESTIONS:
In your opinions, is there anything that is/should be a CANE-Able Offense?
Is a person wrong for cheating in their marriage?
Should it be punishable in any way, form or fashion?

I think this would be a good starting point for debate.

If you think nothing is worth a caning . .. then you have your opinion .. anything like this is beyond your comprehension.

If you think some things are worth caning . . .then what are they and how do they compare to this.

We bemoan something like this. . . but then we bemoan AshleyMaddison.com
We seem to be seeking some little perfect area between these two extremes. The question is . .what does this area look like?

    Thanks for those honest answers.
One more question: Are you Pro or Anti- Death Penalty?

I ask because . . . I beleive that there are somethings that should be Cane-able. Theft, Robbery, buglary, etc. I think alot of these
crimes would be reduced in number with some good Caning to the violators.

    OK.

Sounds like a half-hearted attempt to justify whacking somebody with a cane for engaging in a consensual relationship to me.

Maybe you should take your own advice and...

my point some schools like private ones in Australia, still sanction caning to their students.. it looks like people here okay with that.. because no one has really complained about it..

for sure its less painful for lesser offenses..

if there was a law in other democratic countries that sanctions comparable light (as painless as the one in schools) caning to men or women who commit adultery it really doesn't sound that barbaric and cruel unless everyone considers Australia is a brabaric or cruel country for giving the same punishment for children who are misbehaving..

    1) Private institution (school, speaks only for the institution itself) vs. State institution (police and courts, speak for everyone)

    2) Child (where discipline is being rendered for misbehavior) vs. Adult (who is being punished for exercising free will that does not harm anyone)

    3) Corporal punishment is barred in public schools in almost all of Australia, and in the majority of private schools.

    4) And then there's the question of severity. Caning for discipline is different than caning for punishment. The freaking lady passed out from it. Are these kids getting beat so bad they bleed? Google caning. It ain't pretty. Kinda doubt that is happening in most schools you speak of. I can't find a particular case of abuse that doesn't lend itself to some country in either Indochina or South America.

Barbarism is barbarism no matter where it happens, but you're making a fool's comparison by lumping state sanctioned and executed punishment for adults getting it on with private school institutions enforcement of discipline for youth.

While I don't mind people getting canned for certain offense, adultery is certainly not one of them. It's a matter of the heart and should handled at a personal level. Sounds like the parties involved just needs to go to divorce court.

before anything, I repeat that I believe that these few private schools in australia implement very light caning that's why they have not been outlawed yet and that is the same form of caning if a state carries out on adulterers I will not be up in arms about

agree its different but the state institution is allowing the private institution to carry out caning. probably not that harmful/violent.

I agree child and adult are different

but IMO some forms of misbehavior is also a form of exercising free will and does not harm anyone

I just questioning why the govt of Australia still allowing some private schools to carry it out. again probably very light caning.

again I said the same exact caning sanctioned by the private schools..

same everything.. same equipment, same force, same audience.. nothing different

the only difference is one is done to a misbehaving child and the other to an adultering adult

Sharia Law is bad if it is imposed. If someone voluntarily chooses to follow it than there is nothing wrong with that. I think it's important to make that distinction.

What bothers me is not that people condemn this caning. I condemn it too.

It's that they get all up in arms about this act but don't start a thread or make a big deal about all the terrible things that are done in their own communities or neighborhoods.

Some dude gotten beaten to a point of a coma because he rooted for the wrong sports team in L.A. Where's the thread about that?

You want to know why? This thread isn't meant to just condemn a caning...if that was the case, there would be many other threads about many other injustices across the globe.

This thread is meant to put down, annoy, irritate, and provoke. It's meant to get under the skin of certain people. It's pathetic.

Are there a lot "Christians suck" posts? I do remember some. Maybe this is just counter? I don't know enough of this board's recent history.

There does seem to be some PC feeling that Islam is not to be criticized. Of course, there's probably much more unfounded anti-Muslim stuff going on so the PC stuff might have a place. I live in Los Angeles though and I think attitudes here are different here.

Please note that I'm not calling all Texans rednecks.

here's the thread on the baseball beating:

    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=203230

the beating wasn't state sanctioned, nor based on strict interpretations of religious doctrine. Sharia law is bad. Law based on strict fundamentalist Christian teaching with punishment out of the Old Testament would be bad too. Don't quite know how you 'choose' to be be subject to Sharia law -- could she opt out of the beating? But regardless -- I'll just say it's bad.

I have no beef with Islam. If it's good enough for Muhammad Ali, Cat Stevens, and Dream, I'm good with that. I suppose I should just skip these threads. I guess they're too often just pissing matches. I just found the wiki caning paste a little bizarre and don't like it when abhorrent practices are tolerated under the guise of cultural sensitivity.

    C'est tout.

Caning is worthless and just very uncivilized at this point in time, put that aside.

My issue is with saying it's a matter of the heart. Wth? There's people fighting for marriage rights, there are men and women who lose so much of their life LEGALLY due to amicable or non-amicable divorce.

Love is a matter of spirituality (heart).

Adultery can be anything. Spirituality, goal-less, sex-driven, stress-driven, whatever.

Marriage is mostly a legal thing too. It's the state that grants you marriage rights. It's the judicial system that will decide what happens if it all goes wrong. Really, the only non-legal part of it is a priest or imam or maybe just yourself recognising your will to get married.

IMO it's very simple. There is already a system in place which punishes child abusers, etc and it is centered around money. That is the correct system to correspond to the hugely legal process of marriage and divorce and whatnot.

As for the "heart" part of it, that's between those two consenting adults and they should figure it out themselves. If they can settle that part themselves, great. If not, then it will likely spill over into the legal side, which is precisely why there should be an independent entity like an arbitrator overseeing the process.

I've seen many people get divorced recently only for the guy/girl not be required to give them a dime and they keep the children and there's houses and cars and bank accounts and cash and jewelerry involved. This is no longer just a matter of the heart. There are potentially real legal impications for adultery. Among other things, child support, termination of pregnancy. I'm reading wiki right now, and it says that in the US military it's a potential court-martial offense. Depending on each state, could be a life snetence, a fine or a Class I Felony too. Even if some of these things are not enforced, you should be weary of breaking a law that still exists. In short: I am against punishing it and in the case that it causes non-emotional damage, the damages should be considered.

The caning in Indonesia is an even further despicale act because it is a matter of pride. This practice is only in place for the guy to be "vindicated" in society. This re-enforces his belief that he is perfect and the bull**** marriage is her fault. If he believed it was his own fault, he could stop them from caning her. Why do you think guys are rarely caned for this? Because they're usually sleeping with someone else who also doesn't want to get caned, but more importantly, THEY GET TO HAVE 4 WIVES. lol If you can cheat on top of having 4 wives, then it's time to seek medical attention.

The only acceptable form of punishment now IMO is financial and imprisonment, and I doubt imprisonement will be around much longer - I'm sure we will find ways to imprison people without physically confining them to a space.

I'd be interested in starting a discussion, perhaps in a separate thread so that the discussion isnt influenced or assumed to be dealing with this particular news item, concerning corporal punishment and why it is that so many appear uncritically opposed to it in any form.

Assuming that its applied only following a determination of guilt and not before it, and that we're excluding especially severe forms of corporal punishment, then why would it be such a bad thing?

With the highest incarceration rate in the world, it's only natural that we begin searching for solutions.....
