https://www.23andme.com/ I've been wanting to do this for a while but only when I had the cash for it but it's free today, sort of. You have to pay a $9/mo fee for a newsletter but I'm ok with that. It's usually $199. If you don't know what 23andme is, here's some info about them from their site. I really don't know anything past my grandparents from either side and I can't access records since there aren't any from their country. It would be really interesting to know if I'm at risk for any preventable diseases. As far as things I have no control over, well, I'll just roll with the punches. So has anybody tried it or interested in it?
i was going to order it today..because every year..for DNA Day, the have a promotion. it used to be 499 or something..then 199..but DNA day..it's about $100.

I did it. Hard to say whether you'd find it worth the money or not though. I got the Xmas special of $100. Not really worth it yet (but they continue to add more research as they learn more about gene expression). Basically, it only tells you if you have increased risk, typical odds, or decreased risk for the diseases. Then it links some genes to certain traits w/varying confidence, etc. Ancestry is very accurate.

I did some googling and found out that life insurance companies can deny you based on this and you have to report it to them. Hmm might need to cancel.
So i just bought one for my girlfriend and I.. Mine is just for fun.. and she is adopted and mixed but does not know what race the father is so this should be interesting for her..
Health insurance can't... link EDIT: per the 23andMe site, GINA does not cover life and disability providers. So, I guess if you were required to answer a questionnaire and that questionnaire asked about things you learned through the reports you'd have to answer. If they didn't ask, you shouldn't have to tell.
More descriptive title would have helped. I thought this was a P90X knockoff. Anyway, it's interesting. I am worried about privacy issues. I also want to do that genetic ancestry service- what's it called? I knew an Indian MD who did it and they traced some of his ancestry back to Scandinavia.
Got my results back. Unfortunately it seems genetic research has only been done on Europeans so their results don't apply to me being Indian. I don't know that much about genetics but I know statistics, but if they could get enough people to volunteer their dna as well as some information about themselves I don't know why they can't run some stats and get some correlation between what genes do what.
So nothing traces back to Europe for you? I worked with an Indian md who used a gene site to trace his genes and had ancestry all the way to Scandanavia. Greek culture wasn't the only thing Alexander the Great's armies spread all over southern Asia. Btw, I'm waiting on my results too.
According to the site my ancestor came from europe and central asia/eastern europe. Some of their traits are off. They did get my eye color right, but thats about it. According to them I am supposed to have red hair, and they missed a lot of other traits. Also the stats they give are kind of dumb. for example I have 40% higher chance of getting some kind of disease. However this works out to be 1.4% instead of 1% so that doesn't really say anything. The best thing is that they give you the raw data so some day in the future when more research is done maybe that data will be useful for anything. With the technology we have and such a large population size we should be able to take everyones DNA and information and have a much better understanding of what genes do what. Instead I get the impression it is pseudoscience, but I don't mean that in a literal sense.
The only thing I did related to this would be the National Geographic Genographic project, but that didn't do anything specific to risk factors for diseases or anything. I just did that for kicks with a friend. I may look into this, but if it means insurance companies can screw you over, then forget it. lol.
