Actually, I think I get the same mpg when I go 80 as opposed to 60. I have a meter on my car that lets me know how much mpg im getting...
Well, I am thinking it also depends on your RPMs. Some of the higher end luxury sedans have 8-speeders now so they would probably still be rolling quite efficiently (comparatively speaking) at 85, probably not much worse than going 65. Of course, drag is a biatch but again depends on so many factors, like size of car, design, engine, transmission and all the rest.
They should make the 10 85 all the way from Santa Monica to Jacksonville. That would be pretty sweet.
why? Why it shouldnt be available everywhere i agree to have it in remote areas. Drive from El Paso to Ft. Stockton some time and tell me you don't think they should increase the speed limit out there.
on the other hand.... Every car on the market gets better fuel efficiency on the highway than in the city (usually MUCH better). So, even if driving 60 mph is more efficient than driving 80, they're both more efficient than what you do around the city (which is probably where you do the most of your driving).
Exactly! Actually El Paso to San Antonio is all nothing. I was happy when they raised it to 80. 85 is even better!
This would probably have no impact on my driving habits. I'll do about 85-90 on the interstate anyway, and I don't think I'll be going any faster just because the number on the sign went up. Doubt it would have any effect on them, since they'll probably reduce speed limits near towns.

As for those who disagree with the proposed change, there is no legislation that mandates YOU have to drive 85. You can still coast along at your speed but stay on the right lane for those who want to go faster.
I am so sick of this sort of argument, which happens all over this board and all over America too. If you wreck into me at high speed because you can't handle driving 85, your right to go fast which isn't supposed to have any effect on me suddenly does have a huge effect on me. Stop pretending like you live in a bubble where your actions don't affect other people and where every attempt to limit what you're allowed to do is an oppression.

True. And it does nothing to affect my point. It's why we make people take tests to get drivers licenses -- because bad drivers minding their own business can still kill you. It just adds injury to injury that driving exceptionally fast increases the likelihood that an accident one causes is fatal, on the margin. I'm not objecting to changing the law; just objecting to the idea that one's freedom to drive slower than the speed limit negates any complaint one might have about very high speed limits.
