    It's -576.

    48 ÷ -1 = -48
    -48 * 12 = -576

The troll force is heavy in this thread.

I got 288, but only because I had gone "left-->right" rather then "P-E-M->D-A-S"

Both answers could be correct, depending on what decade you were taught in. However in the current decade, the kids are being taught left-->right.

Like someone earlier said, it does defeat the whole purpose of PEMDAS being an acronym and trying to make people remember it in order.

When I was younger I learned to do it in order, P-E-M-D-A-S, checking off each step of the process as I moved along.

However as I got older and moved toward my educational pursuits in law, I fell out of touch with my math skill. So I went to KhanAcademy.org and attempted to teach myself from the ground up. I encountered the above situation when I attempted to solve an order of operations problem on the site by going "multiplication then division (PEM-->DAS)" and the answer came out incorrect. I then watched the tutorial video to figure out why and thus the new rule of "left to right" was learned.

This is why you don't use the ÷ sign.

    Technically it should be 288.

Those who are arguing parentheses first, you do what is inside the parentheses first, not what is attached (multiplied) to it.

To be two, it would be written:

    48
    _____
    2(9+3)

Technically multiplication and division carry the same weight in order, but who the **** ever uses the ÷ sign? Is that even a thing? I thought its only use was a button on a calculator.

It's hard to believe the fundamentals of algebra were taught differently just 20 or so years ago..

you are right.. In the last step, I'm not sure why i divided by 12 instead of multiplying by 12

Which one of these formulas seems ridiculous?
    48 ÷ -(9+3) = ???

    48 ÷ (-(9+3)) = ???

Neither because both are very clear and different.

    DINGDINGDINGDING!!

The 2(9+3) ties the 2 to the result - in other words, 2(9+3) becomes (2x12)

THEN the rest of the equation happens.

At least that is how I was taught.

I don't know what you're going on about, these are 2 different problems. Top is -576. Bottom is -4. The bottom problem should have brackets somewhere. In that case, brackets, paranthesis, etc.

2(9+3) is no different from 2x12.
You still divide first, since it shows up first.

So you are claiming that the negative sign right next to the parenthesis does not make the sum of the parentheses negative?

    48 ÷ -(9+3) =

    vs

    48 ÷ -1 x (9+3) =

    vs

    48 ÷ (-(9+3)) =

Sorry, I make a living on excel where there is no need for brackets in such equations.

The negative sign next to the parenthesis, like you said is just multiplying by -1. Because there is a "48 ÷ " in front of it, the -1 is multiplied to the whole equation.

    48 ÷ -1 x (9+3) = -1 ÷ 48 x (9+3), because multiplication and division are interchangeable.

This seems wrong. Order of multiplication/divisions signs is everything. What Chiev I think is implying also seems wrong though.
