It's seems to be an age divide, between which a focus on operations has usurped a focus on problems being written more clearly (read: specifically). Probably a good thing, but as usual the side who is accustomed to the current accepted norm acts like an ass about it, rather than presenting the facts and differences in a normal discussion. Get off my lawn.
Do the parenthesis first so its 48/2 * (12). Then work from left to right, since there is both division and multiplication so 48/2 is 24. then multiply 24 by 12.
They should have never used this abbreviation of PEMDAS, it serves no good if people don't remember the rules.
Can more people please re-write their interpretation of the equation? I think we need a few more of those.
Looks like the parenthesis are screwing some people up. If its just a single number inside them, then its just normal multiplication, so you go left to right. That or they're just trollin.
Wrong 48÷2(9+3) = 48÷2(12) To those who said it works in excel, you would have to correct it to =48/2*(12) which is not what the original formula implies. To me, it's an incomplete formula and has no answer. Now on to the rest of my day...
seriously guys its 288... first 9+3=12 second 48/2=24 ( you divide first because you go from left to right and the division comes first ) third 24*12=288 it ain't rocket science
A number on the outside of groupings means the same thing as if it were 2 x (9+3). The answer of 2 would be 48/[2(9+3)] when looking at it from a straight line operation perspective.
Right and the answer is still 2. Why do you continue to divide before you multiple. 48/2*12 left to right on 2*12 not on 48/2 that's dividing first. At best this is a vague equation but the answer is still 2.
