LOL, the bodybuilding forum is almost 50 pages into their argument. http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=133389973
This is why it should be written: __48__ 2(9+3) OR 48(9+3) 2 Mathematical equations should be written to be clear, not confusing.
The room full of computer programmers I work with all came up with 2. I had to explain to them why 288 is an option. lol. I guess it all comes down to how you were taught to handle the multiplication/division priority scenario.
WTF, Windows calculator say 4?? The real answer should be 288. You go from left to right. So 48÷2(9+3) is 24x(12)=288. If it was 48-2(9+3). It would be 48-2(12) or 48-24=24. Multiply or division comes first.
I never had to worry about it before because my textbooks weren't assholes that asked intentionally confusing questions. Never heard about PEMDAS or Order of Operations until today.
The grouping of the 9(2+3) almost seems to imply that, or that there's parenthesis around them. I don't think there's much confusion on what the question is if it's: 2 x (9+3). I might still get the answer wrong...
