I believe for it to be 288, the 48÷3 would have to be in parenthesis as well. (48÷2)(9+3) = 288 But the way it is written I interpret it as __48__ 2(9+3) which equals 2.
okay then 48 ÷ 2*(12) = 24*12 = 288 multiplication/division work from left to right if they're both in the same problem, and then it applies to addition/subtraction.
That's how you'd write if you actually wanted to be clear...and didn't want to win a inter-tube-fight about applying left to right operators first in an ambigously written formula.

The order of operation is Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and then Subtraction. WTF? Seriously? I mean, SRSLY? I'm retarted? kthxbye.
lol...this subject is a ****storm. From Texas public schooling (Huntsville...which tells you alot), we always learned that multiplication and division carried the same weight...and when they are encountered together, do the multiplication first. Granted, I learned this in the 80's, so things might have been classified further. So...that being said, I will submit that if Google says 288, then I'll buy my method as outdated and insufficient.
Order of operations is really Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication, Division -->interchangable Addition, Subtraction -->interchangable their is no "and then.."
OK. One last time. P E M D A S 48÷2(9+3) Do what's in the Parenthesis first: 48÷2(12) no Exponents anywhere, Multiplication follows: 48÷24 Division is next: 2 WTF did you all go to school?
