I want to get into the books but I'm really hesitant about starting a series that possibly won't end. That would be a big crap on my face.
Meh, I was satisfied with Lost. I'm more worried about it being equivalent to Heroes... starting great only to go out with a whimper. (I'm talking about the books)
Not going to happen. Heroes was a big mess with producers influencing the story. GRRM Controls the story here, and he's clearly stated that he has the end of the story in mind.
I mean I'm not talking about the HBO series. I'm talking about the books. How if I read it then be bummed because it won't have an ending.
Happy to help. That site was a godsend for me when I was trying to learn all the families and characters.
Launched a weekly column today on Gunaxin for all things Game of Thrones. Its fun to be able to write about something this cool. http://bit.ly/hWWIdX
Those of to reading the book for the first time: for the love of all that's holy DON'T READ ANY SPOILERS. I am smiling thinking about all the stuff you guys are going to experience as it goes along. Do yourself a favor and don't ruin what's going to be an awesome experience.
^ This! Also, just an FYI that there is a 30 minute making of special on HBO tonight at 9pm Houston time.
Funny you say that... GRRM actually called out Lost for it's ending: http://io9.com/#!5788838/george-rr-martin-talks-about-world+building-tinkering-and-the-ending-of-lost. At least Lost had an ending... According to this: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/04/11/110411fa_fact_miller he's actually blaming his readers on his writing taking so long.
I started reading Game of Thrones about a week ago and I'm around 80 pages in. I watched the 15 minute preview on HBO and luckily it covered just about up until the point I was at in the book. The show looks awesome, but I really want to finish the book before watching it. Hoping I can hold off.
Wow really, that is stupid, Martine shouldn't complain about bad endings of other books/series. If Martin had the deadlines the producers of lost had he would have failed misserable. Can you imagine if we had to wait for over 6 years for the last season of lost.
Writing a novel and putting out a show are completely different. That Martin guy had other projects/books he was working on that were not Game of Thrones related. Also authors and writers have more freedom with their time while I'm sure Lost producers had timelines and such. . If they take extended breaks, they risk losing viewership. Almost all network tv shows are continuous on a schedule each year. (Rant begin) I thought Lost's ending was a complete cop out. Loads of hardcore Lost fans up to the last season arguing everything will fit together but when it finally comes, with tons and tons of plot holes left unanswered, they say "it doesn't matter, it was so well done, it was entertaining so I'll forgive". Ooof, and didn't Damon say it would not be a purgatory ending? Lies. So so obvious they wrote it on the fly and made it up as they went along. (Rant over)
True, although Martin doesn't have a team of writers to get stuff done. But yeah, he should probably focus more on getting to the ending than worrying about other stuff like Lost.
There is great daily coverage of Game of Thrones on www.winter-is-coming.net The whole Martin vs Lost thing is a bit over blown. Martin was a big lost fan outside of the ending, which is true for about half of the Lost fans I would say. Lindelof is a big fan of Martin's work, and while he was upset to see his finale called a failure by one of his idols, most of his tweets were meant to be funny more than true personal attacks as many of the entertainment headlines make it sound. Good interview with Lindelof here: http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/04/05/thrones-author-lost/

Man, the more I see of it the more excited I am. I bought a 110" screen and projector before Christmas but it was backordered so Christmas passed. I hoped for Superbowl. Then I hoped for Final Four. Finally it is in now so I am super excited for Game of Thrones to be my first cinematic experience on it.
