I challenge you to stop using escalators, elevators, garage door openers, etc., or anything that has an "easy" (lazy) way of you getting to where you're heading.

Weigh yourself NOW. It's APRIL 5, 2011. For One Month, do not use elevators/escalators/etc.

Come back on May 5, 2011 (appropriately, Cinco de Mayo), and tell me if you don't feel healthier and more fit than before. I believe you will. Even if you don't lose weight, you will be more fit.

No special diets (don't pig out!), no rigorous exercise (do not use elevators!). Just remember the NO-ELEVATORS rule.

I also play in the intramural soccer league at the place where I work, so that should help burn some excess fat. I weigh 173lbs. right now and think I will be under 165lbs. come May 5.

Here are a few examples of things you can do that can help with the challenge:
    • if you work anywhere but the main or ground floor, take the stairs.
    • if you go to the mall, don't ride the elevator or escalator to the top level.
    • if you are going to the corner store and is within a walking distance, don't drive... walk there.
    • be courteous if it helps you burn some calories (open doors for peeps, carry your wife's groceries into the house, etc.)
    • don't pig out and stop yourself from eating to get full. Just eat to not be hungry.
Will you take the ONE MONTH challenge?

^ just stop being lazy, tubby. :p

You know I kid. Basically, just... have alternate ways of doing things that can make you burn fat. You know... walk to your boss's office for a quick chat instead of calling on the phone.

I don't use elevators, and the only escalators I use are at Toyota Center on the way up, stairs on the way down. You're on Swoly.

I'm pretty sure those that accept this will work on a lower floor than 14 (my Houston office) or even 9 (my Beaumont office). And actually, I can't avoid elevators completely. It's the only way off the ground floor in my Beaumont office.

    I'm in.

For lunch today I walked to McD's for a cheeseburger. Does that count?

(and be weary of Spinal Tap-esque corridor mazes should you try to avoid elevators in corporate buildings. Those doors leading from the stairwell are often locked! You'll get to visit some of the city's finer alleys when you're eventually spit out from some fire exit (after having climbed several stories up....and then back down and out:(.).

I'm more perplexed by the fact that you think you're gonna lose 10 lbs in a MONTH by doing this. In order to LOSE 10 lbs, you've gotta work up a sweat. Trust me, your soccer leagues and your diet ALONE will go further than any of this other stuff. If you limit what you intake, and you exercise rigorously, you're bound to lose weight.

    ^ groogelrklskdjaiuweiuryoieuyrwrrux,

    :p

weslinder and groogrux, obviously, if you think "that's too much" for any amount, you're going about this the wrong way... you can at least do HALF or maybe ONE THIRD of the total amount of stairs. You don't have to do all the floors. I work on the 6th floor, but I go down 3 stories on the parking garage, then up 6 to my office. My knees will hurt for a while, but if I get fit... well, winning. :)

A Blues Brothers, Animal House, and Spinal Tap reference in the last 2 days. Impressive.

Anyway, I do little things like this every day. I rarely use the elevator at work and take the stairs up and down several times a day (5th floor), I walk 6 to 8 blocks to catch the later bus downtown in the mornings and afternoons instead of waiting right where I'm dropped off. Little things like that, plus (gasp!) eating less helped me drop about 30 pounds last year. And I've kept it off since then.

But I'm not messing with my garage door opener. That one seems kind of silly.

Isn't there an option missing in the poll? This should suffice:

LOL! No way. I'm fat and proud! / I hate you SwoLy, so NO, THANKS.

I just don't think it's fair that only the skinny people get to express their SwoLy hatred.

On that note...I usually do small things like taking the stairs (even though I'm only on the second floor), park at the first available spot (it may be close, or it may be far...but usually the latter), oh, and last but not least...since I'm usually at the Rockets games right when the door open, I walk plenty of laps before going to my seat. Of course, the beer may offset this by just a bit....

I guess anyone planning on doing this can't go to most malls for the next month either....Wait, I think I have a solution

this way we get the best of both worlds!!!

I'll try your challenge, but I work on the 16th floor, so I doubt I'll make it the whole month.

I'm here at the mall, standing in front of a non-moving escalator. Not really sure what to do here. Awaiting feedback. There's a line forming behind me and some lady is talking to security about 'the crazy guy talking to himself about escalators'...I don't see him but I'm scared.

Please hurry, Swoly-D, you're my only hope!

There is no shuch a thing as a broken escalator..............when it doesn't move they're called stairs. Get to stepping before you get tasered!

So I can accept your challenge of "not using elevators/escalators/garage door openers, etc." by using elevators and escalators less? I change my mind. I accept. That's easy enough.
