Let's fact it Obama will win. He will continue to try to position himself slightly to the middle of the Repubs as they move hard right. The GOP will self destruct and the real players like Jeb Bush will sit this one out. Obama will talk about cutting spending to the middle class and poor and deficit reduction, run around with Jeb Bush talking about education "reform" which largely involves inane testing and lowering teacher's pensions, back track on torture, perhaps make Petreus the head of the CIS if rumors are true, continue numerous wars to show how patriotic he is, stop civilian trials for folks at Guantanamo, etc.

Obama will even protect the lower 98% a bit against the ravages of the nutters who control the GOP. but only if he can do it without pissing off virtually anyone. He will do somce cautious triangulation and won't contest the conservative narrative that has led us to this mess.

Obama talks about spending a billion on his reelection campaign. For that much money we at least deserve a debate and an introduction to mainstream Americans of a new plan to reverse the transfer of wealth from the lower 98% upward and to take care of other pressing needs. Without an opponent we won't even hear a plan from Mr. cautious.

Who can run to provide the narrative and education that Obama will avoid if he has no opponent? Kucinich says he won't run. Bernie Sanders would do a great service to America he did, but I don't think he will do it? Maybe Russ Feingold?

Maybe Grayson from Florida, the alleged "congressman with guts" who lived up to his slogan unlike Obama with his now laughable "audacity of hope" slogan.

It is the chance for a new leader to arise-- someone who can lead us out of the morass as the public gradually abandons trickle down and dcides 'war is not working". Sadly for the dwindling fans of cautious moderation the times call for something a bit bolder.

Feingold. He was probably the best senator in America. He'll make a good governor candidate up there too some day.

The only non-corp dems I can think of are in the House, and they're so underfunded their campaigns would hardly get off the ground.

Which is why, even if there is such a thing as a non-corporate Democrat (I think ALL politicians are corporate, to a certain extent), they wouldn't run now. They'll wait four years and run in 2016.

Worth noting here - the current supreme court's 5-man majority's rabid enthusiasm for corporate political speech and untrammeled rights of non-physical objects to funnel as much money as humanly possible into the political process as a fundamental tenet of the first amendment makes the election of any non-corporate backed candidate in any race of consequence impossible.

Basically the way the system is being setup right now is the ultimate catch-22:
You really can't regulate spending in elections now under the S.Ct unless you either

    1) pass a constitutional amendment - an incredibly long and difficult process, and in which parties will be able to spend unlimited amounts defeating,

or 2) unless you appoint a brand new supreme court, another incredibly difficult process that those who can spend unlimited amounts will be able to influence by electing their own candidates to prevent this from happeng.

So effectively, the only way you can reform elections to make them less susceptible to these interests is to have an election, in which these interests can, and will exercise as much influence as possible. The fox is guarding the henhouse.

And it happens to be the 5-man conservative majority that has established this failsafe - which disproportionately benefits those who currently possess large amounts of money and influence, be they actual people or multinational entities. Coincidence?

Somewhere in California, Mr FranchiseBlade is sobbing uncontrollably in his little classroom surrounded by his indoctrinated students. Mr Blade could not believe that his far left buddies on this forum is turning against Barry, the only man that he ever truly loved.

This is so so sad, I wish I could be in California now to console Mr Blade. I will put my arms on his shoulders and tell him that everything is going be alright and his buddies will learn to love Barry again, and I will give Mr Blade a big hug too.

    Peace out!

This is a good way for a non-corporate Dem to be able to get some air time and actually make Obama talk about something reaL during what otherwise will be a somewhat empty billion dollar spectacle-- not just sound bite a bit to the right of the Repubs.

I suppose the folks putting on the debate can always nix this if they decide the challenger is not polling high enough. I really think a progressive will appeal to enough Dems who are unhappy with Obama to meet this burden. Again the purpose is to force Obama to do something other than his nature to play small cautious ball after elite permission.

PS Given the alternatives I intend to spend a few minutes voting for Obama. Don't ask for any contribution or effort other than that.

If only Joe Kennedy were still around.

Then fanatical Conservatives can roll out the rock blocking Reagan's cave for his miraculous zombie comeback.
