There is no reason why we should take a step back in our development as a team, especially since the All-star break and the roster adjustments. I think it's only fair that Rick gets to have another year with a team that won't get off to a bad start like they did this year. He knows the team quite well and the players work well with his system. Why let it go?
Because he may not want it? I don't blame him. When he took this job the team seemed to be right there, just a step or two away. Now, who knows. He may want to end his career coaching closer to home or just end it completely.
I've heard coaches are still paid if there's a lockout... If that's correct I can see why the Rockets aren't too quick to extend Adelman's contract.
Well if he doesn't want to coach here than I understand letting him go would be best. I just haven't seen any solid clues that Adelman clearly wants to try something else.
I'm on board with keeping Adelman for another season. Right now we are one step away from contention. That step is an adequate big man. We have all agreed that is what is currently missed by this team. Draft as if Yao is retired, try and use some of our assets to move up in this draft, try to make a free agent aquisition in the off-season(D. Howard) and go from there. Although it's too late , the team is really putting it together now. Why mess up a good thing. They should also look into getting one more PG in the draft as well.
adelman has said many times that this is one of his favorite teams to coach ever. even if they do not make the playoffs, he would cherish the moments he has had with this team. with those statements, i'm sure adelman is willing to come back if the organization wants him back. and i do want him back. i was hesitant b/c with this roster, it's not a championship-caliber roster. but you never know what roster changes may happen. he's a great coach and the team would be fortunate to have him back
Exactly. Why he would want to endure another 3-4 years of a new team integrating his princeton offense is beyond me. He's old, and already has a team who knows how to run his offense, as well as the personnel suited for it.
At least 2 years. You don't offer a potential HOF coach a one-year contract. That's like asking Yao to take the veteran's minimum.
I started my Re-Sign Rick campaign this morning, replacing twitter and facebook photo with this: I had brought a poster with Re-Sign Rick to the last game against the Hawks, but just held up the Martin one I made instead because my spacing was terrible and it made the sign look like it read "Resign Rick" (not what I wanted!) No coach could've done more with this team. He came in his first year coaching McGrady and Yao, who became very inconsistent as to when they could play due to injuries. To top that off, Morey has thrown him a lot of curve balls with his many trades and our high player turnover. I think I heard we've had 30 players in the last 2 seasons? He's got to constantly readjust and wait for the new guys learn the system. Sure there are times when I've gotten frustrated with his rotations or didn't like his reluctancy to play some of the young guys, but since the all-star break it has been perfect. We have the 9th winningest coach in NBA history, with an excellent winning percentage! We're not going to get any better than that... but wait we can... because if the Rockets win tomorrow, Rick Adelman will be tied for 8th place with Bill Fitch at 944 wins! This was just posted 13 hrs ago about the most winningest coaches in NBA history http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ycn-8215153
Just my opinion but I think Adelman's willing to stay even if this team is a few seasons away from contending. He strikes me as someone who's more interested in coaching a team that "plays the right way" and less in a mercenary opportunity to get that elusive ring before he retires.
Adelman is the type of coach who would be perfect for the Lakers, Celtics, Spurs or any other veteran laden team which has a defined identity and set of stars. Hell, that's the main reason he came here in the first place, to play with Tmac and Yao. He's not the best coach for the current rox because we have a lot of young, immature and inconsistent talent. There's no point in keeping him if RA keeps playing the wrong guys, and keeps having zero tolerance policies for players who are too dumb for his system. Also at 65 I question his work ethic and attention to detail, there's no way you can convince me 65 year old Adelman is still as hard working and as enthusiastic about his work as 40 year old Adelman. It would be better to let him seek employment with a contender elsewhere (Lakers?), and we retain Turner and see what he can do.
I don´t know if Adelman will re-sign or not, but he is as underrated as Kevin Martin is in this site. A 65 year Adelman doesn´t pay attention to detail??? I guess he keeps overachieving every year with the team he is given, and still doesn´t pay attention to detail. People overrate the "play the right guys" argument. You know why Carl played every minute like it was his last one...... You know why AB played every minute like it was his last one.... You know why 2Pat plays like there is no tomorrow (talking about when these guys were given very limited mins)..... BECAUSE ALL 3 GUYS HAD TO WORK HARD TO GET COACHES TRUST(mins), and all of them got increased minutes because they performed, meaning, they understood coach would play them if they outplay the guy in front of you in the rotation. If you give a talented rookies all the mins to do all he wants because he is talented, you will be in mediocrity like Sac, Clip, Wolves etc. All of them have a lot of young talent, but because all of the young talent have the mins to do all the crap they want, they don´t feel the pressure of having to perform to get mins, they just get playing time because there is no one to compete with. Believe me, 2Pat, right now, must be dieing for mins, because he knows he is performing, but he also knows that guys like Scola have been producing for several years, they proved they are starting material, so he will work even harder to get better. If you have the right rookie mentality, Adelman is one of the best coaches to have, he demands rookies to be responsible for everything they do. And if you perform, you will get increased mins, without giving freedom to do whatever you feel like just because you are a talented 10th pick player. Bud understood he needed to increase his desire to play better D and waist more energy on it to have more playing time, 2Pat has the mentality, we will see if Hill has that (the fact that he coudn´t focus on b-ball this year didn´t help), there are serious questions about t-will, but I predict he is understanding Ricks approach by the day, he will humble himself and will start "getting it" next year, and I think Thabeet has the mentality, tho he is not ready to play right now. But I totally understand you, y´all would play Thabeet Pat T will Lee and Dragic and call it a day, I bet you that players would develop alot quicker just because they play more mins........ Of course you need to play, that is why Thabeet and 2Pat went to the d-league, but more playing time does not mean quicker development and there alot of young teams that are bad coached in the NBA that prove what I just stated. You need to give these guys the tools first, because the NBA is another world, and the team they play have a specific way to play ball, and then given the tools, you start getting very limited mins, were every single action you do, is scrutinized on video after the game, and worked on next day. And this is a continues work that young guys need to do specially on the rookie year. PeAcE
I'm ambivalent. He's a great coach, but the Rockets have a bigger problem, their reloading plan just isn't working, and I'm afraid it's going to take another wasted season before Les figures that out and blows the team up.
If RA just stayed consistent either way I would be fine with it, but he flip flops rules depending on whether the player was a favorite of his or not. T-Will couldn't play even 1 second because he doesn't understand the offense, yet we have Brooks running around likr s hrsflrdd chicken, stopping the ball and bricking shots and he still got consistent PT. Also I don't think PP was such a headcase and lazy bum that he had to spend half a season riding the pine just to get the right attitude.
