Astros fans don't know suck. Many more meaningful September games then most teams not blessed with truckloads of money...

We certainly have a smaller margin for error than those two teams, but as msn just said. The Yankees were pretty bad/mediocre for a good portion of the 1980s and the early 90s.

I can't tell you when they will compete for the division again. We don't even know who will be owning the team by season's end, or if we'll have baseball next season with the collective bargaining agreement set to expire at the end of this year.

I wouldn't go that far. The Yankees have had 6 losing records since 1970. They did go through a 4 year stretch of suckitude in the late 80's / early 90's, but otherwise, there were winning 85-95 games a year in the 80's even though they weren't making the playoffs.

Correct. But they weren't the behemoth they've been regarded as since '97. They were just another good team. Pretty good some years, OK some years. Then (IIRC) they were doormats from '89 through '93. The Pirates were contending every year back then, and the Yankees were a joke. These things are cyclical. :)

Do you mean "these things were cyclical?" I'm think the landscape has changed significantly since the early 90's.

No, I mean they are cyclical. The Reds were great in the early 90s, garbage in the early '00s, and decent now. The Pirates were up then and down now. The Yanks were down then and up now -- but the Sox are better now. The Indians were the class of the AL in the mid '90s and today they are irrelevant. For now. These things go in cycles. Sure, teams like the Yankees with deeper pockets can stay greater for longer and be down for shorter amounts of time, but everything comes around. I remember when the Royals and Orioles were the teams to beat in the AL East and West.

Same here, but didn't the Astros have black jerseys before or am I hallucinating?

We do need a new uniform though, still not digging the pinstripes.. And our logo is played out.

Keep the logo. It's classic and I see it everywhere. We need to stop changing or logos for our teams in Houston. The Rockets should have never switched from the ketchup and mustard logo/unis.

THIS. I like the Astros logo. We change our stuff way too much. Only logo I don't like for a Pro-Houston team is the Rockets.

Not sure what's with all the gushing over the Astros. They're basically a poor-man's New Jersey Nets team over the past decade, taking huge advantage of unbalanced schedule and weak division/conference, but always get killed by the big boys. If anything, the Astros of the 80s IMO were more impressive, due to them winning one division when there were only 4.

Case in point. We were Atlanta's whipping boys during their dominance, a stretch where they were the definition of choke. Basically, Atlanta choked against everyone but us... because many times we backdoored ourselves into the playoffs, and just wasn't good enough for Atlanta to choke against us.

My point isn't that I didn't enjoy our success. Lima time, Big Unit, Beltran, Pettite/Clemens, etc. etc. etc. were all incredibly memorable for me as a fan. But looking forward, we must realize that with the emergence of the Reds and Brewers into non-punching bags, the Astros have to rise above what they were during their glory years to even have a chance at the playoffs. Because they can't rely on killing tons of crappy teams to pad their win totals now.

    Because the bar's higher now.

And when you're done with that, please explain how the NLC was "weak" in 98, 99, and '01 compared to the East or the West.

The Astros did have black jerseys very briefly right after Enron Field opened. They may have just lasted one season, as a matter of fact.

Yep, they were really nice but apparently the players didn't like them because they became way to hot during day games. To bad because they looked much better then the red ones we have now.

Backdoor into the playoffs winning over 100, 97 and 93 games? I agree the divison is better but it all runs in cycles. Stros went to the freaking WS and were 12 outs away from another...id call that freaking succesful no matter who they beat to get there.

Thanks for that... it was well articulated. I couldn't have said it better.

The Cardinals backed into the playoffs in 2006. And their WS trophy looks a lot better than what the 2001 Mariners got for winning 116 games.

The Astros were legit contenders during their playoff runs. That is all that matters. It is nothing like those Nets runs where the East was just a contest to see who would get their asses handed to them by the West.

Who cares how anyone gets to the playoffs as long as your team is there?

why do people work so hard and reach so far to diss their hometown baseball club? honestly, had they won the thing in '05 most of these haters' drivel wouldn't sound much different than it does now. "they backed into the playoffs and got lucky the Yanks or Sox got upset." blah, blah, blah.

The Astros were one of the best franchises in MLB from 1992-2005. Deal with it. Right now, they're among the worst. But they'll be back. These things are cyclical.
