Didn't this guy promise not to burn Korans not too long ago? Or did he only promise not to burn them on 9/11?

Mob kills 8 U.N. workers in Afghanistan
Officials say a crowd of up to 1,000 people attacked the United Nations compound in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif, killing eight guards believed to be from the Philippines. The attack was sparked by a mosque sermon describing the burning of the Koran by an American pastor.

A mob inflamed by a mosque sermon describing the burning of the Muslim holy book by an American pastor attacked a United Nations compound in a northern Afghan city on Friday, killing at least eight foreign staffers, according to Afghan police.

A spokesman for the U.N. mission in Afghanistan, Dan McNorton, confirmed that there had been deaths of U.N. personnel in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif, but said he did not have further details.

Sherjan Durrani, a spokesman for the provincial police, identified the dead as guards at the U.N. compound who were believed to be from the Philippines. However, some Afghan news reports said the dead included guards who were overpowered in the attack as well as other U.N. workers who were inside the compound at the time.

Durrani said four rioters had also been killed and that more than 100 others were injured in the outbreak of violence in the northern city, normally one of the calmer corners of Afghanistan.

The rioting erupted after mosque preachers at Friday prayers -- the most important of the Muslim week -- sermonized against the burning of the Koran by an American evangelical pastor in Florida. After the service, up to 1,000 worshipers marched on the U.N. compound and overran it, police said.

Durrani said order was restored and that about two dozen people had been arrested for taking part in the attack.

The attack was quickly condemned by President Obama. "I condemn in the strongest possible terms the attack on the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan today.

"The brave men and women of the United Nations, including the Afghan staff, undertake their work in support of the Afghan people. Their work is essential to building a stronger Afghanistan for the benefit of all its citizens. We stress the importance of calm and urge all parties to reject violence and resolve differences through dialogue."

McNorton, the U.N. spokesman, said the head of the world body's mission in Afghanistan, Staffan de Mistura, was traveling to Mazar-e-Sharif, which is north of the capital, Kabul. Even hours after the attack, he said neither the death toll nor the nationalities of those killed could be confirmed.

"The situation is still confusing, and we are currently working to ascertain all the facts and take care of all our staff," he said.

Friday's violence was the worst attack against U.N. staffers in Afghanistan since October 2009, when gunmen and bombers stormed a guesthouse in the capital, killing five foreign U.N. workers and two guards. That prompted the world body to order the relocation of hundreds of expatriate employees.

Hundreds of people also took part in an anti-Koran-burning protest on Friday in Kabul, massing near a heavily guarded area where the U.S. Embassy and the headquar.

So CBS news is surfing for random YouTube videos to get their "news" now. I'm sure Edward R. Murrow would be proud.

Justifying what? I think we are pretty much all against mobs killing UN workers and none of us believe Terry Jones' idiocy makes the mob violence remotly justifiable.

    1) The Islamic extremists who made the peaceful protests violent by killing those people are ignorant scum who have no concept of freedom of speech, no matter how distasteful it is.

    2) Terry Jones, living in America with access to so much knowledge and information, should know better that #1 is a pack of savages who can become civilized once education, jobs, infrastructure, electricity and water are brought to them.

Bringing our 21st century ideas into a land that's been backward for so long is difficult. It's a fragile experiment to cure the dominant type of extremism, and it's extremely vulnerable to setbacks like his burning the Quran for publicity.

A kid I knew in junior high used to believe in the practices of New Orleans Voodoo. In spite of other people warning me that I would get hurt if I taunted him for it - he was a giant, I still did it anyway.

Well, I got beat up lol. But, over the years he became agnostic, and we became friends. We laugh when we think about that day.

He was wrong to hit me, but so was I for egging him on, though not nearly as much. Provoking him did nothing; what he learned in high school and college away from his religious family, that changed his beliefs. The man now works at a major national laboratory, and he is a brilliant physicist.

I'm not saying Afghanis and the like will became exceptional success stories like him, but that anecdote better explains why Terry Jones is also in the wrong.

You should really blame the people that actually killed the UN workers instead of the pastor. At least mention them. While wrong and clearly a stupid thing to do, the angry mob that stormed the compound are the culprits. To me, it seems like we've gotten to the point that we're saying, "Don't anger Islamic practitioners/extremists. You know how they are."

To me, the first people that need to be dealt with is the mob, the killers to be precise. Then go into how wrong the pastor was.

It seems like we accept how many of these Islamic nations are and behave. Instead of blaming the Islamic people who actually committed the murders, the blame lies at the feet of pastor.

Had the pastor not burned the Koran, this would not have happened, true. However, we can't just sit back and accept them killing people, because someone burned a holy book.

I agree with you that the pastor played a small role in the deaths (only reason I'm mentioning it is because he was told that his actions would put our folks abroad in danger). That's like saying we should blame the mother of the pastor. If she wouldn't have given birth to him, he would never have burned the Quran.

But I also just want to mention that no other country had a violent protest (not that I have heard of so far) except Afghanistan. Not defending what those idiots in Afghanistan did but I have a feeling that this was a catalyst for a lot of other crap. Again, in no way am I justifying what they did. Just saying it wasn't all peachy and then all of a sudden people went nuts after the burning. There were other reasons as well (i.e. strong hatred for U.S. presence in their country).

Fantastic post. Only thing I would add is regarding the bolded part. I think it would still have happened. They would just have found another excuse for it.

And mc mark, your post, with all due respect, is really dumb. Terry Jones - while the description "assclown" seems quite accurate - didn't get anyone killed in Afghanistan. The Islamic extremists got them killed.

if you want to blame terry jones you also have to blame the afghani media outlets who spread the story over there and our own corporate-owned media, some of whom stand to profit by further tensions in the mid-east. but the real culprits here are the murders...not some attention-w**** wanna-be pastor with a congregation of a couple dozen morans. but why does our media give so much attention to such an insignificant "pastor". its not like this is john hagee or joel osteen here...again, this dudes congregation is just a few people.

terry jones didnt kill anyone, here or in afghanistan - he was exercising his first amendment rights as an american citizen. as long as he isnt stealing and destroying others property let him burn all the books he wants - if he and his followers are stupid enough to go around buying korans just to burn them that is their business. the only reason anyone even knew about it was b/c the media gave him a platform to bring attention to it.

the first amendment cuts both ways and although jones has a right to do what he is doing, we have a right to criticize him for it. i will exercise my first amendment rights now by declaring terry jones an ungodly, unchristian moran.

its unfortunate that a bunch of extremists on the other side of the world get so worked up and are so brainwashed that they will murder innocent people over this...but you cant allow incidents like this to be used to curtail our freedoms. that is just a defeatist mentality that gives in to "the terrorists" even more than we already have with all the TSA groping, warrantless wiretapping and indefinite detention.

the stuff with south park really highlights how ridiculous and media-driven all this is - 10 or so years ago they had an episode where they actually showed mohammed and nobody made a stink about it - then a couple years ago they tried again and the media went ape-poop and matt and trey started getting death threats - so they cut mohammed out - but they showed jesus watching p*rn and snorting coke and pooping on the american flag...and that was ok with the censors.

too many muslims are way to sensitive about this and too many americans are too quick to call for curtailing our first amendment rights over their reactions.
