I agree with you there but these elephants were threatening the farmer's survival. Here's a quote from Reeko's AOL News link. He never answered the question. If you had to choose between survival of humans or elephants, what would you choose? These elephants were in the crop fields, they were a direct threat.
If you ask me it is the Rat that is more worth saving. It is not a dumb mindless creature, and is also used for scientific experiments because of similarities. Of course most people here would rather want the Rat dead, but in those countries? Elephants have raged and killed people, I doubt most of those people see them as gentle painting giants they are usually portrayed as.
The choice to be made is hunting down the elephants versus dealing with the problem in a more humane way.

I can not believe people are comparing rats and elephants. Like many posters here already said that elephant is highly intelligent, and reproduce at a much slower rate than rat. If these people argue that life is a life then where do we draw a line? Ants and bacteria are also alive should we not kill them? And I am sure that an american's CEO goes all the way to Africa to help kill the elephant, I they wanted to kill the elephant for the reason they stated, they should have hire a pro hunter not some super rich CEO. I don't see us putting an ad out to let anyone kill a death row inmate, u needed training for that and I am sure there are much more qualify people to kill that elephant than godady' CEO
either way, they don't use wild mice or rats they are breed in captivity for experimental purposes. killing an endangered animal when there are better ways to divert them from farmland is just lazy and morally irresponsible.
Did you not read my last post? It doesn't matter. They are both farmed for medical use. Wild rodents aren't used.
