Do more countries than not have the death penalty? Is Western Europe the exception, where they don't have it?

the better answer of course would have been "JFGI brah". but ok.

Of course your link confirmed that when looking at it by population, most of the world's population lives in countries that have the death penalty. So this thread should be about why all the little enlightened countries in Europe don't have it.

I agree with it in principle, but not in practice. I fully believe that there are some people who don't deserve to live, but I couldn't imagine being the governor and having the power to save a persons life and keep them locked up and not utilizing that power.

Seems to me there is a difference between killing an innocent child and executing a convicted murderer. The child never gets a chance for a jury before which he or she can plead its case for his or her life.

These abortion threads always get so contentious. What? This isn't an abortion thread? The death penalty is a totally separate issue?

yes who doesn't love an abortion joke in a thread about the death penalty?

frankly, the victims of the family should decide the fate of the wrongdoer. i would think the majority only care which option would cost them less tax money, which would be the death penalty.

You brought up the comparison. I only responded to show there is a huge difference between killing a child through abortion and killing a convicted murderer through capital punishment. The comparison certainly is not a topic for mirth -- it's no joke to me, maybe for you.

Don't commit the crime and you don't get the punishment.

    1+1=2?

The death penalty serves as a deterrent. A large portion of criminals don't commit such profane acts because they don't want to get the death penalty..........

The death penalty (as implemented) costs the taxpayers about 3 times as much per prisoner as life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Studies have shown that the death penalty is no greater a deterrent than prison.

If you support the death penalty, you should also support cleaning up our legal system, a system which has landed innocent people on death row, because every false conviction undermines the public's support for executing criminals.

LOL, ok so since China, Iran, North Korea, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Syria are doing it it must be ok. We all know that these are the countries you (and basically any person who cares about human rights) look to as role models for your human rights choices.

I support the Death Penalty .... as an option for the convict.

True, we can never know the absolute truth about guilt or innocence. It's been proven so many times. But the convict may know and he should be allowed the choice between life without parole and the death penalty.

Let them have all the pure heroin they want.

Emotionally I agree with it. If someone does something horrible and cruel like kill innocents or my family members I would think they should die.

Rationally, and spiritually I don't agree with it. It doesn't prevent more crimes, it doesn't bring the dead back, and it isn't loving or forgiving to execute someone.

I guess in the end I'm against it despite the emotional level.

I'm also against it until/unless we can be sure nobody innocent is put to death. At that point, I'm still not sure. While it doesn't bother to see a murderer put to death, I don't see any really good reason to do it either. So I'd prefer to err on the side of less barbarism and in the end I guess I would just prefer not to do it at all.
