    Flood gates are busting open.

We need the college football version of Jose Canseco to come out and spill his guts.

Not sure if you're being serious but there's no way there is going to be a lock out. The NCAA will hand out the usual punishment (i.e. forfeit games won, reduce scholarships, ban bowl games, etc...) and everything will be forgotten in a couple years (if that long).

These types of allegations are made every single year (Clarrett, Bomar, Bush, etc...). Hell, this year's Heisman winner didn't even have to sit out a single game even though his family admitted to receiving benefits. Boosters are going to pay players and there's really not a whole lot the NCAA can do about it. Even if player's are legitimately paid (as some of y'all have suggested), it's still not going to eliminate the "bonuses" top recruits will get to sign with certain schools.

So you want a league where the athletes can get paid for their services? That's not amateur, that's professional. The farm systems in baseball and hockey, the NBDL, the Euro leagues, the USFL, the old World League/NFL Europe. Those are all pro leagues. You can't pay players and call it amateur athletics.

    OK, thanks.

Semantics then, when I say amateur, I mean the level of competition.

Agreed. However. I believe that their league should be more like a trade school.
Practice in the afternoon. . .
Schooling in the morning - ettiquette, money management, interviewing, rules, etc
If you don't like it. . . shut up . . .it is now part of THE JOB

The NCAA does indirectly pay the kids - schools provide them with scholarships.

Now you could argue the kids are being used. Some of these kids don't belong in school.

They should learn those things as part of their secondary education, IMO.

Who would fund this league/trade school? Just like the NBA, the NFL's true farm system is NCAAF so they're not going to fund it and there's obviously no way the NCAA would fund a rival league. Just like the XFL, people aren't interested in watching amateur football in which there is no school affiliation (i.e. NCAA) so you cannot expect them to support themselves.

There are obvious problems with NCAAF but it has been happening for a LONG LONG time and you don't scrap something as big as NCAAF because a few schools/players are cheating (or get caught cheating).

first of all, college football players aren't one and done. second of all college football is freakin awesome. so lastly, i really don't care. i'm sorry, a school gets caught cheating and i just don't care. its college football, there are bigger concerns in the world, than usc won a national title with a guy who's parents got a house. so what? so what they don't belong in the schools, really?

I'm of the belief that college players get paid via scholarships, free meals, and free clothes they get.

That was fine back when college athletes didn't make bundles of money for their universities.

Now those kids are bringing in far more than they're taking away.

So the cheating is inevitable, and their demand to be compensated accordingly will increase.

Sure. But tuition cost have also risen, so they are being "paid more" in a way. Not that you're making it, but I hate the "scholarships does not mean they're being paid!!" argument. I don't see how people could argue that when Notre Dame students are shelling out $40,000 annually just to attend the school.

Obviously, each school's tuition is different and some pay very little. But I still don't think any of the players should be paid. The NCAA has been corrupt for so long with under-the-table payments that now people think it'd be better if we just legalized it.

If you're giving a kid a scholarship and he doesn't really belong in school, then he's actually not really getting all that much out of it.

But unfortunately, school is his only route to professional athletics.

So he has to take it.

Instead of money, which a non-college-material kid could use a hell of a lot more than a scholarship.

You have a stronger argument if you're talking about college basketball, not football. Every high school senior football player belongs in school.
