he plays defense first and foremost, which is a required quality of a champioship-caliber PG. he passes well, he controls the team pretty well, and now he can make his jumpshots. i didn't think he would be a very good starter last year, but i'll gladly say that I'M WRONG. go lowry!
I don't think it's the sarcasm's fault. The real problem is people don't know hot to use emoticons!
Battier missing shots? You call 45.6% FG with 39.1% 3pt shooting missing shots? The best 5 man rotation for Rockets this year has Battier in it. AB is a different story.
I think he can as long as he's youre 4th or 5th best player. I wish he would start playing better defense. As a bench player, he was above average, now he's average at best. He just reaches in now.
In the past, I looked at him as a guy who could be the PG for a championship team, provided the players around him were much better than he was. In other words, he wouldn't impede a team from winning a ring, but he would never be a major contributor, sort of like Derek Fisher. With the tear he's been on since the deadline, I'm starting to wonder. A PG who puts up 20 and 8 on 60TS% while playing nasty defense is a huge plus for any team. Obviously we're looking at a small sample size, but even if he drops off and produces at, say, 80% of the level he is now, he'd still be a key contributor on a championship squad.
Yes he can be a Championship PG with the right pieces. If you look at the history of teams that win Championships it is not done around an Elite PG that teams choose to build around.
What happened to all of his explosiveness? It seems like he can't really get by anyone with out the aid of a pick.
The thing is, you can say that about almost every PG. The whole "championship PG" thing is overrated. Aaron Brooks could have been a "championship PG" with the right pieces around him. A lot of PGs could. Can Kyle Lowry be the starting PG on your championship team? Sure. Can he be the best player on the team? No.
He's a top 10 point guard making a modest salary. I wouldn't be opposed to upgrading to a Paul or Williams, but I hesitate considering those guys get paid three times more. I would rather keep the salary-to-talent ratio of Lowry at point guard and use that extra cap space we're saving to fill a greater need. Oh, and yes...I could easily see him as a contributing point guard on a championship team.
our backcourt is top notch, our front court is shockingly bad, though a cpl ppl have potential and Chuck's improved game would make a solid 6th man on a contender.
The notion of a championship [insert position] is stupid. Nazr Mohammed, Rick Fox, and Antoine Walker have all started for championship teams in the last decade. Derek Fisher too, if you want a PG example...although I like him, he's never been one of the best 15 PGs in the league, but you couldn't tell that by looking at his ring hand.
I disagree. That's in line with Artest or Ariza for the Lakers. He has more impact on the game than them. I think he is a little ginger right now. Might be the ankle or something. He still forced at least 3 turnovers by Holiday last night but def could have done a better job in guarding him. Holiday is a damn good PG himself though..
That's been on my mind too. The other day J Van Gundy mentioned in a podcast that it is really going to take a superstar wanting to be here before we will ever get one, even via trade. I just can't fathom the idea that NO superstars want to come play for the Rox ... If you were Dwight Howard, wouldn't it be clear that all the Rockets need is someone like him, and they'd dominate for a long time to come?
Obviously, you think I pulled this thought from one game. Lowry all season has been sticking to screens and reaching. He will bow up every once and a while, but he seems more content taking the ball out the net. Also, he passes his man off while he's below the free throw line trying to get offensive rebounds or trying to get steals which put the defense in bad position. In terms of importance, he's in 4th or 5th territory. Thats not a bad thing. Scola and martin are 3rd options in terms of importance. So if you're saying lowry is 3rd, I'm saying you're team wount win a title or if martin or scola are higher. If your willing to say lowry is on par with those two, then you think he's as vital as someone like parker/manu or ray allen.
You criticize his defense and then you throw Parker out there, lolz? Anyway, he could easily be the startin PG for every contender in the league right now, no question.
How do you play perimeter Defense in today's nba? Especially at point guard? What I see out there is that the "superstar", when guarding his man is allowed to do things that are no longer allowed, like hand-checking. Just go back and watch the miami game and watch wade grab his man as he is trailing the pick. Infact, on the last air ball Martin threw up, someone had a hand on his back. And who was the awesome defender that allowed that bum, kmart to score 27 points? Great defense that was. For what the NBA is, a joke and a clear advantage to the offense, Lowry is an excellent defender. It's just that other teams get away with more and other teams have someone taller than 6'6 protecting the rim. I know many don't like yao either, but when either he or that kid Mutombo were manning the center position, red nation ranked pretty high in the defensive ratings. Rule #39, there is no such thing as a coincidence.
