Well I am looking for customer service or to work at a call center. The problem is I am 22 and have never had a job so most places probably says well he has zero experience so lets trash his resume. The only useful thing on my resume at this point is the fact that I volunteer at a homeless shelter Tuesday - Thursday but that hasn't gotten me anywhere because it doesn't relate to the jobs I am applying for.

But all I an do is keep trying at this point.

Yep, it stinks. What you might can do at the top of your resume, after your heading (name, address, etc.), is put:

CAREER FOCUS: CUSTOMER SERVICE / CALL CENTER

** Skilled in interacting with individuals from a broad range of backgrounds, listening intently to their needs, and providing excellent service.
** Knowledge of customer service practices and principles, including gathering information, responding to specific requests, resolving problems individually as well as escalating selected issues to upper management, and matching customers' needs with the most appropriate products and/or services.
** Dependable, trustworthy professional. Maintain a high level of integrity and take on extra responsibilities to help achieve goals.
** Understanding of the fast-paced nature of a call center and the dedication it takes to meet service goals within this environment.

With these, you're saying that you have the skills and knowledge; even if you've used them in a homeless shelter or community activities, skills are skills. So you could state something like these w/o being deceitful, and the reader would get a strong impression of you as a customer service-oriented person.

Glad to help. When I went through my really down-and-out period in 94 (lost my job at Cypress Creek High School, couldn't get back into my field, living near poverty), my inspirations went by such names as Olajuwon, Horry, Smith, Maxwell, Thorpe, Jent, Cureton, Herrera, Brooks, Elie, Cassell, Petruska, Tomjanovich, Smith, Dawson, etc. I am not lying when I say that my major inspiration for bringing myself out of the worst period of my life was the 94 Rockets, particularly the Suns series (the Choke City thing). Like I said, Rockets brothers gotta help each other.

    have a situation

i'm working for a very good company in the department most of my career has been. it is a temp job doing some mundane work that really will not expose my experience.

the department has an opening fitting my skills and past experience. I'm mainly working with a supervisor and i sent him my resume and he said to fill out the online app. i did that. I wanted to get some face time with the manager. the supervisor has been out, and the manager has been more involved so i got a chance to introduce myself

today i got some face time with her on the elevator so i asked her if she was over the position and could i send her my resume. i've also wanted to ask if she had any extra work, if i could send my resume to see if she would be comfortable giving me some more responsibilities. didn't get into that, but about the resume she was pretty dismissive also and told me to fill out the online app.

should i send her my resume anyway and ask her to do some extra work or should i leave it alone. i would hate to let this opportunity pass, it would be a dream job.

I think I had the worst experience yet

I was called by a staffing agency last thursday at 3:00pm. they actually asked if i could come in that day but I went friday morning. i live off 290 and tidwell, drove to pearland in the pouring rain. got there and its a chop shop, you know these staffing agencies that's just churning out these minimum wage jobs.

a pet peeve of mine is having to meet in person with the agency but i'm cool with that. i have to fill out a paper app after filling it out online, i'm still cool. so the lady comes in, asks me what position i was there for. i tell her and i'm like you didn't get my resume? she says do you know how many resumes we get in a day. so i'm like, cool, i tell the lady i understand that their shop isn't used to dealing with more professional jobs so i'll go through my resume. well she apparently took that as an insult, proceeded to tell me i had a chip on my shoulder and wouldn't submit me to the client.

    unbelievable.

dude, two of them called me for the same position just one saturday and one yesterday. i had only dealt with them one other time but it was for the same job about 6 months ago.

then one called this morning for another position. the three previous guys called about a job at BP. so weird with their letters of exclusivity?

While I don't discount ur analysis of the staffing agency......you did insult them. There is no reason to tell them that their agency doesn't deal with professionals such as urself.

it does sound like an insult, though... even if true and even if not intended to be insulting. i'm not sure why you would have said it at all?

yeah, but its pretty damn frustrating showing up for an "interview" and they don't know anything about you. i didn't mean it as an insult and i certainly didn't feel it came off that way. i was just explaining why i thought they would have my resume, and i understood why they didn't. i get that the literally see 100 a day, as she also pointed out to me.

oh well, i can b**** and moan, i'm the one who won't be submitted for the job.

because it was very awkward, i was like you don't even know my name. just something i wasn't used to. but the point is was pretty damn accomadating and showed great interest in the job to show up on less than 24 hrs notice in a storm from 45 minutes away and for her to say i had a chip on my shoulder.

edit: when i asked if she had my resume it was a pretty innocent question, and i immediately got the "do you know how many resumes we get" so she started the awkwardness.

I did one of the worse interviews ever a few years ago.

I was interviewing to be a server at Olive Garden, and during my first interview the assistant manager asked why I was leaving the restaurant I currently worked at.

I told her well I'm much younger than everyone and I'm the only non Hispanic person so I don't really fit in and I'd rather work with people I have more in common with.

She then said well I'm older and hispanic how does that make you feel? And I said well.. Awkward now. Never got that second call ha.

Hopefully now that I'm about to start applying for jobs with my degree I've learned from my mistakes.

the worst thing i did in an interview was said hitler was a great military tactician. how did that come about you ask?

this is so long ago i will just go ahead and name the company, Shell. I was about a year out of college, got one of those great college recruiting interviews where you get to eat dinner the night before at your choice, i chose carrabba's.

the interview was for accounting at their campus off dairy ashford and i-10. well apparently i told someone i liked history. so this accounting chick in her need to feel cool asked me what generals i really admired. i don't know why hitler came out and if i'm insulting anyone to this day just be repeating this story i apologize.

I'm with you on this one. She is potentially making money off you after all. If I was the end client and a good candidate got dropped because of that I'd be upset.

true that, and i'm not saying she's good at her job - though given the number of people looking for work, she probably placed a candidate and got paid anyway.

but people are like that sometimes, so you got to watch what you say..

My wife interviewed for a nursing job she was ridiculously qualified for. Wierdly she talked first to the person who would be her supervisor who wanted to hire her and told her that.

A few days later she talked to HR who started off, Well Ms. , why did you decide to be a nurse? My wife laughed, could not believe it and replied: " I don't know. It was so long ago I can't even remember, thinking what a moron! Fortunately sense prevailed and she got the job where she still works today. She likes to tell the story.

Hitler? Really? The man was a maniac who had capable generals under him.

Alex the Great or Napoleon. Maybe Genghis Khan.
