    THANK YOU LETTER

So, 94% of job seekers forget to send a thank-you letter to their interviewers. Thus, even if you send a friggin card that just says, "Dear NAME, thank you for the interview! Sincerely, ME"- you're in the 6%!! If you really want to write an effective thank you letter (and not too long, although longer than a card), you write a thank you letter in which the middle paragraph references the interview and ONE key point the interviewer emphasized while reiterating your background in that key area:

    November 16, 2010

    Contact Information

    Dear ___________:

It was a pleasure to speak with you earlier this week regarding your current opening. I appreciate the time and information you shared about your current needs and goals.

After reviewing our conversation, it is evident that a key aspect of this position is the ability to work with others and help medical professionals develop curriculum to improve the quality of video production. As we discussed in our interview, I have worked successfully with many diverse groups, including staff, administration, students, and parents, in order to create improved video lessons. In addition, I have extensive experience working as a volunteer to assist community groups in developing video presentations, including the Houston Food Bank and the American Dental Association.

I look forward to hearing from you again so that we may continue our discussions regarding your organization’s needs and the performance you can expect from me.

Again, thank you for your time.

    Sincerely,

    NAME

What's the over/under on how many resume help requests dandorotik gets from this thread?

Kidding, Dan. Thanks for the info.

Edit: Hang on a sec: how to you submit all of these various files and forms to a website that just says "submit resume; click here"? I have my cover letter and resume as one document. Should I do the same with all of the reference summary, etc?

No, you're absolutely right- I feel kind of like a d**k even posting this because, if I were reading it, I'd say, "Oh, f**K this guy- nice way to "promote" your business there, Dorohick!!" But, you know, no one on this board would need to hire me- I mean, you look at the resume example- if your resume looks neat, easy to read, and focuses on achievements, then you don't need to hire me or anyone (and since I got this govt. gig, I can't take on any resume projects for the next 60 days, anyway- have to refer all calls and requests to others).

But I'll send anyone free samples- Houston Rockets bruthas gotta help each otha.

Nope - resume, cover letter, and references- all separate documents. Resume no longer than 2 pages, cover letter no longer than 1, references doesn't matter regarding length0 but generally speaking it's a page. Don't send references pre-interview- they are legally not allowed to contact your references without permission. Submit References Summary during interview- send thank you letter the next day after the interview.

Federal resume? Can be 3-5 pages. Longer to write- but the fed. govt. is also more fair in their evaluations, so it's worth looking into.

Example of the difference between a private industry resume and a federal resume

Employer Info on a Private Industry Resume:
Name of Company, City/State, Dates of Employment, Job Title

Employer Info on a Federal Resume:
Name of Company, Street Address, City/State, Zip. Job Title. # of Hours Per Week; Ending Salary: $____; Name of Supervisor: _______, Supervisor's Phone: _________, Supervisor (may/may not) be contacted.

No. Resume and cover letter- that's actually fine as one document. References always during an interview. I know this begs the question: "so, how the f**k IS THIS SUPPOSED TO HELP ME GET INTERVIEWS!!!!" The reference summary is meant to solidify your chances to get the job. As far as getting the interview, if you noticed on that resume sample, the candidate included a quote from his performance review on the resume. That's sort of how you can hint to them that your employers would say you did a good job.

Now, you're an RN, and I can tell you that applying for a job in the medical field- a great, evergreen field- is a pain in the a**. And sometimes, you have to write the resume the way they want- like in a CV format where you put your education first, etc. So I understand your frustration- believe me, up here in Lubbock, the largest employers are Covenant Health Systems and Texas Tech Health Sciences Center (well, that's #3 - 2nd biggest is TTU, and they're considered separate entities). So I hear a lot of complaints about the "unfairness" of the system.

Looking at RN positions directly through the Michael E. DeBakey VA Hospital here in Houston, new RNs go through their RN Residency program same as everywhere else. Some hospitals will list their new grad/new RN jobs with a similar heading as the one you posted, i.e. "Staff RN 1," and the RN Residency program will essentially be linked through such a listing.

I ran into a similar thing when applying at The Methodist Hospital: I was searching the site for some time looking for something that said "RN Resident" or "New Grad Intern," like most hospitals have, before giving up and calling to ask where the link was. It was then that they told me the position marked "Staff RN 1" was the same thing, but that newer RNs with some experience could apply for this as well, meaning the spot was open to both new RNs as well as RNs who had at least some experience, essentially saving them money by not having to put a green RN like me through a residency, which includes class time, 1:1 preceptor, etc.

    Its all....very frustrating.

But I'm going to research that one you referenced tomorrow. Thanks again.

Job hunting has been so frustrating for me. It has gotten to the point now that I don't even expect to get a job. I'm shocked when I'm called for an interview. My last interview they told me they were calling between 4-5 for second interviews if they were interested. Well 5 o'clock hit and I snapped. Went home and started throwing stuff:mad:

^Dude, ya gotta stay optimistic. Not sure what you're looking for but if they're looking for a skillset and you don't know the answer but you still feel highly capable, brush up on it with interview questions online. Glassdoor.com... interview questions are golden.

I just burnt some time reading this chick's blog on resume writing. She might be entertainingly crazy and give questionable career advice but I'm guessing her resume tips are solid if she bounces from job to job and lands them.

Great advice by dandorotik on this thread.

The things that bother me are dumb headhunters who basically just scour Xing or Linkedin and try to look for people with the same job title as the position they are trying to fill and waste your time, interviewers who bore me with stupid canned questions and doing interviews for positions as a "plan B" when I basically already know I don't want the job. In the same situation, it is also annoying to have to talk to a whole bunch of very junior people who should all report to me anyway. Some HR people are incredibly dumb.

I basically get to most any interview I want and that I am reasonably qualified for and once I interview, I usually get an offer, unless I arrive a few hours late for my interview (happened) or turn a boring interview session around by quizzing the interviewer on why he/she is stuck in a corporate job instead of starting their own company. That usually doesn't go over too well, although it should.

Edit: Forgot to say: Good luck to all job hunters out there. I hope you will find what you are looking for.

Well I'm confident when I actually have the interview even though things haven't worked out so far. My lack of confidence is just feeling out the application and expecting them to call me. I basically taken on the "prepare for the worst hope for the best" attitude.

Thanks for the resume links I will check them out.

I don't know your field, but I'm taking the approach of applying one up and one below the title and seeing where it goes. The more the merrier.

Getting rejected stings a little, but I have a lot to learn about this process and any experience is good experience. You should be sending your app out 30 times+, making a checklist off of each one of them, with nagging reminders to follow up through land, air and sea. And the fact is we'll probably go through at least 4 or 5 professional jobs in our lifetime with the way things are. I don't mind getting burned (mostly because I'm still working) because this is a mandatory life skill like doing taxes or buying a car.
