Should Hakeem be forever grateful the Rockets gave him a chance to play in the NBA?

Discussion in 'Houston Rockets: Game Action & Roster Moves' started by meh, Mar 28, 2011.

Where do top picks go if the teams that drafted them chose someone else instead?

  1. They would never have a chance to play in the NBA

  2. They would simply be snatched up by the team next in line in the draft

Personally, I've always thought that NBA teams who get top picks are happy to get a chance to draft high, and get exclusive bargaining rights with the best player available that year. i.e. Cleveland's happy to get the chance to draft Lebron, Magic was happy to get the chance to draft Dwight Howard, Rockets get the chance to draft Akeem Olajuwon, and so forth.

Yet it seems that the prevailing sentiment on the board is just the opposite. That players should be grateful that a team took them in the draft, and then proceed to give him the slotted amount for rookie players. In particular, fans believe Yao should be grateful to the Rockets for drafting him, and then paying millions to keep him. Because without the Rockets, Yao would still be playing in Shanghai as a stiff not worth a damn.

So is this true? Would Hakeem have gone on to be an office worker had the Rockets not picked him? Would Dwight Howard and Lebron went to college and then had their degrees if Cleveland/Orlando not picked them? Would Yao never reach the shores of US if the Rockets didn't pick him?

What's with all the sarcastic threads? It gets annoying after a while.

    Edit:

Ok, sorry, I should read your post first. To address your point, the Rockets have done a lot for Yao since he joined the team and have showed incredible amount of patience and loyalty in my view. I don't think he'd have gotten the same treatment from most other teams, but who knows.

    100% serious.

It's about the dynamics between players and teams.

Is this one of those threads where "if you don't like the post and have nothing to contribute to the discussion then just move on without replying?"

    Well, is it?

hakeem also brought the city of houston 2 championships, i see the case you're trying to make. But it doesn't work all around. You have to take into consideration what those players did for the team.

You can't use hakeem olajuwon, 2 time finals MVP, top 10 player of all time to make the case for Yao. Sorry if it sounds insensitive but its true.

    Every case is different.

OF COURSE Hakeem, Howard and James would have been picked by the next team.

But if the Rockets hadn't picked Yao, he would be still in Shanghai.

You can't just generalise like that buddy - you gotta look at it case by case.

Yao should be thankful for the chance the Rockets gave him - it was his only shot.

I think you're mixing sentiments. Yao should be grateful that Les really committed to developing Yao and putting good people (both players and management) around him. Although it seems like common sense to try to make Yao into a global phenomenon, there are several owners that wouldn't do it and several cities where Yao wouldn't be unhappy. Yao's career would be completely different if he played for Donald Sterling or James Dolan.

This really has nothing to do with your poll question of should #1 overall picks be grateful for being taken #1. Obviously Yao would have been picked #1 overall by anyone else too or simply taken #2 had we passed.

Maybe Yao doesn't need to thank the Rockets or Les in particular but he sure as hell should be thankful for his good fortune.

As a Rockets fan, I'm grateful for having Yao, even if his best seasons were few and there due to injuries. I think Yao should be happy with what the Rockets have done for him and I think Les should be happy with what Yao brought to the Rockets.

Why is there need for this thread, where's the beef?
