The biggest question of animated comedies. Obviously Family Guy's biggest plus is their unpredictability. While the Simpson are classic comedy jokes majority of the time. So my question is which do you guys prefer?

American Dad! is better than Family Guy.

Re the actual question, The Simpsons. I don't even see it as an option. The Simpsons is a classic, though, the newer episodes are nowhere as good as it was about a decade ago.

Simpsons. They had a decade+ worth of great episodes plus a strong feature film. My only quibble with them is that Fox has kept them going too long. They've been repeating storylines for a while now.

Family Guy had in my opinion 3 great years and everything after they came back from cancellation was merely okay. The freshness wore off all the non-sequitor jokes pretty quickly.

I grew up watching the Simpsons, but I hear a lot about Family Guy is hilarious, I admit that they give me a few laughs but still not as good as prime Simpsons episodes.

I grew up with the Simpsons but I can admit Family Guy is way way more entertaining and funny.

In terms of "career", the Simpsons destroy every other wannabe. Thinking back, what makes the Simpsons even more impressive is that they managed to be funny as well as the following.

    1. Sophisticated - Jokes that make you think and make you go, "wow, that's quite clever"
    2. PG-rated - Hilarious despite no vulgarity and generally doesn't try to be offensive
    3. Subtle - Lots of jokes within the flow of conversation, and not try to ram it down your throat to make you understand.
    4. Classic, Classic lines - The only lines I remember from Family Guy is nothing. Whereas you have certain Simpsons lines that can be used as analogies. i.e. Lisa's Rock bit.
Homer: Not a bear in sight. The Bear Patrol must be working like a
    charm.
    Lisa: That's spacious reasoning, Dad.
    Homer: Thank you, dear.
Lisa: By your logic I could claim that this rock keeps tigers away.
Homer: Oh, how does it work?
    Lisa: It doesn't work.
    Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: It's just a stupid rock.
    Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: But I don't see any tigers around, do you?
[Homer thinks of this, then pulls out some money]
Homer: Lisa, I want to buy your rock.
[Lisa refuses at first, then takes the exchange]

The better question: Simpsons or South Park.

If Family Guy was never renewed, I would have said it was the better show. The funniest episodes of both series come from Family Guy. But since it came back, I have never seen a show recycle so many crappy jokes and incorporate absurdly long "jokes" just for filler. Because of that, the Simpsons wins in a landslide. It is the much smarter, consistent, amd complex show.

But King of the Hill is still the winner for me, Ill take it over either show

I dont think that is comparable. What SP in its first 8 or so seasons will never be matched, but their fall has been even farther than the Simpsons.

the Simpsons are actually funnier than Family Guy now. Seth McFarlen has stretched his jokes to way too many shows:

    Family guy
    American Dad
    Cleveland show

I think we've done this thread before, but whatever.

In its heyday, nothing could beat The Simpsons comically, especially no other animated show. It's comedy is timeless and still holds up to this day when you look back on it. Family Guy uses a lot of topical humor that falls out of favor very quickly.

Note that I said the HEYDAY of The Simpsons. The new stuff is simply atrocious and a complete travesty.

And yet the new stuff is still not even as crappy and turrible as Family guy these days.

    Both are terrible nowadays.

The Simpsons were amazing until FOX decided to turn Homer from a middle class father figure, to brainless ape.

The Simpsons died when Groening turned his attention to Futurama, circa turn of the century. But the stretch run from seasons 3-8 is untouchable Americana. The benchmark of intelligent and quirky comedy. Fun for all ages.

Family Guy's initial 4 seasons was some of the funniest TV I've ever seen, but MacFarlane also couldn't keep it going when it was brought back.

Also, Family Guy wouldn't exist without the Simpsons, so theres that.

FG 99-02 (first 3 seasons) has a slight edge over Simpsons 89-99 (first 11 seasons).

It's funny because you say that FG's unpredictability is a strength.

American Dad is McFarlane's strongest show, and even then i'd give that up to not hear his damn voice in anything else ever again.

    yep.
