he is better than JJ ever was in college though. But again so was a lot of other players and they turned out to be busts. It's really hard to tell you just never know.. Just look at Jordan Hill, Terrance Williams, Thabeet.
Other than being a white basketball player, he has no similarity at all to Redick. Jimmer is an insane ball hog and chucker. He has taken it to levels never seen before. His ego is way overboard. He plays no defense. Redick is a good team player and he has good shot selection and a good basketball IQ and he is a good defender. I don't see any similarity other than they are both white basketball players. If I had to make a comparison for Jimmer, I would say more like Iverson.
He also measured 6'2 1/2 with a 6'5 wingspan, which are good measurements for a PG, but his game seems more fit for a SG ... which hurts his draft stock ...
PS. For those of you comparing Jimmer to Iverson, no, just no. Kemba Walker is the closest thing to Iverson that there has been in years. Jimmer, doesn't have the quick first step, or explosive ability that Iverson had. He can score, but doesn't posses other qualities to make the comparison of Allen Iverson.
His spot is to be a spark off the bench type for an offensively challenged team. Or Orlando with Howard.
At least JJ has quick feet. I've never see a Guard like Jimmer play let alone succeed in the NBA with feet that slow.
I dont know that there are any NBA scouts out there that are projecting him to dominate the NBA, but with Jimmer you know what you are getting. The main guarentee you have is that he will have value, at least as a spark plug off the bench or a spot up shooter. Positives as an NBA prospect- 1. Elite Shooter 2. Can finish around the rim 3. Good size & athleticism for the PG position. Can play SG at times. 4. Good Vision, makes good passes at times even though he is the #1 option on offense 5. Competitor, leader, and a winner 6. Hard worker, great character, and has shown improvement Negatives as an NBA Prospect- 1. Has not played much defense on the college level 2. Has to have the ball in his hands to score 3. Not elite footspeed -Overall, the Positive greatly outweigh the negatives enough to keep him high in the first round because if anything he is NOT a gamble. You know that your getting a skilled offensive PG who has a good attitude and works hard. He's not going to dominate in the NBA, but he will have good value.
Wasn't it Durant a few years ago who couldn't rep 185 even once? Or who was it? Anyway bench press doesn't mean a whole lot basketball wise, lower body strength is way more important imo.
They're not similar individual players, but are in a similar situation. They're both primarily scorers/shooters in college, who probably aren't athletic enough to translate their scoring to the NBA and defend, which AI was able to do (he had that Ariza selective defense). The similarity between AI and Fredette is their role on their teams. For Fredette, that role is very likely to change at the next level. I think CCR made an individual comparison to DWill, which i think has merit as well because they have similar frames and physical skills. I think Jimmer has mentioned it as well, but i think Dwill has more explosion to his step/jump And i'm not sure redick is a "good defender", more like he tries hard on defense, which isnt the same thing. I also don't think Fredette would be a chucker on a more talented team. He's shown the ability to look for and hit the open man and has the dribbling skills and IQ to run an offense. If he had more offensive talent on his team he would have been around 7 assts per game, with less scoring.
I don't think the previous posters that compared Jimmer to AI meant that they had similar games; rather I think they were comparing the two players' tendency to take A LOT of shots to each other.
1. You might wanna go look up JJ's numbers, he had higher FG, 3PT, and FT%'s as Fredette in basically the same role on a team that was in a major conference. 2. He's shorter than JJ, and even JJ at 6'4 is below average in terms of size for a 2-guard. 3. He plays no defense. 4. You forget how much JJ had to improve AFTER getting drafted just to become the role player he is today. I mean, in his third year he won Orlando's preseason award for best athlete. The guy became a workout warrior just to get his defense up to snuff. And even with all that he's still just a solid bench guy, nothing more nothing less. The odds are against Fredette becoming as good as the player that Redick currently is.
I would hardly say his athleticism is good for the PG spot. Having hops and being athletic are different. He isn't fast, and he also isn't quick(When I say fast and quick, I mean comparatively). Which for a PG makes it hard to play defense, even if he did put effort on that end. Imagine him trying to cross Rondo on offense. He's a TO machine waiting to happen.
Yes.... except Redick attempted almost the same number of shots a game as a senior as Jimmer did... so I don't see how one is a ball hog and the other isn't. Jimmer averages 20 shots a game for 29 points a game.... that is pretty good, especially considering the level of attention he gets from defenses. His defense is bad, but not really any worse than most scoring guards at the college level. The real issue is whether he is physically CAPABLE of being a good defender. D. Rose was a terrible defender in college and his first two years in the league, but eventually he improved because of his talent..
I totally understand what you are saying, and trust me Im not real hot about the Rockets drafting him high because of his defense if its an early 1st round draft pick, but he has great value to teams because you know what he can do already. He creates turnovers on the college level because he is asked to do way too much on offense, and has a tendency to force shots. If this guy can learn to play off the ball in the NBA, he will play off of better players and light people up when he is left open. I usually would say that college stars like him that have only been effective with the ball in their hands tend to fail on the NBA level, but I believe this kid has the right mental attitude to adjust the way he plays and not run Iso to get himself shots on offense in the NBA. There are few players who have the mental makeup to do this, but I believe he has the right attitude to be coachable in the NBA.
He should be a good PG. Has decent size and can hit open and contested jumpers. Not sure about his strength though. 185 9 to 10 times at a weight of 195 seems low to me but he'll get stronger after he enters the NBA.
LOL, try again. JJ racked up more impressive #s across the board, and he did it in what was considered to be the most competitive conference in the nation at the time.
