i cant understand how you say hes a decent shot blocker, hes exceptional, but somehow the journey from uconn to the memphis grizzlies really made him lose that shot blocking i was used to seeing him at uconn... i just dont get it.

The fact that he appreciates the attention their giving him and is coming to practice early with a smile on his face gives me some hope for the kid. I hope he turns out to be a steal. I would kill for him to develop into a Mark Eaton or Dikembe Mutumbo type player.

CD should give Hasheem tapes of this guy to study:

It's good to hear that CD has high hopes for the man. Already written off by several people - and Memphis... Morey said it back when he traded for him, his stock is down and that's why he was there for the picking. Center that can protect the lane are at a premium. It seemed that Morey was dead-set on getting a center... and the Rockets just could not find one, even with all the assets at their disposal (young talent, draft picks, expiring contracts, etc.)

He is still a very good shot-blocker in the NBA. The issue is every other part of the game.

I really don't like how all the official sport sites/articles are dissing Thabeet's ability. People act like they can tell the exact future of a person by their attitude or their first season, and there are lot of times when this is not the case.

I think there will be a salary issue with him at the end of the year. Unless we renounce him we have a salary cap of something like 120% of his current salary which is something like $6mil. Kills a lot of financial flexibility. Does anybody know. Cough cough BimaThug Cough cough.

Obviously, Morey values Thabeet as a prospect. He would not have taken on the $5+ million in Thabeet's salary next year and traded away a player as beloved as Battier JUST to get a lottery-protected first rounder that will not be conveyed until 2013 at the earliest and could possibly turn into nothing more than a 2017 second rounder and a little cash.

As others have said, this is a classic case of "buying low" with a potentially valuable growth stock. This is a calculated gamble on raw talent, just like the Terrence Williams trade. Let's just hope that these trades can pay some dividends next season.

    ^ BimaThug,

I like what you said in another thread a few days ago. Thabeet is essentially Morey's center pick in this upcoming draft. Or something like that.

Good to see you back DD

Well, the thing about Thabeet is that he isn't dumb, he's quite smart, so my hopes for this guy are high.

Like CD says, playing defense in college is a lot different than playing defense in the NBA. Especially for a big man because of the 3 second rule. He just can't stand near the basket and wait on someone to drive into the lane. He has to learn spacing and timing to be a good shot blocker in the NBA.

I think working with CD will do him a lot of good over time. He seems to be willing to learn and work at it. I don't think we need him to be a 15 pt per game scorer. Just be a 12 reb, 3+ blks, and 9pts. His main job will be to clog up the lane and alter as many shots as possible. He will get his pts off rebs and passes from cutters.

I'm liking this kid more and more as I hear about him. He sounds really genuine and hard-working and I think he'll be something when the Rockets are done with him.

i remember reading this article about how thabeet had already reached his goals when he made it to college, because of being from tanzenia (correct my spelling if im wrong) and he didnt know what to do once he got drafted... but being with the rockets now i hope the staff can change his goals and become greater than he thinks he already has been
