Only a SERIOUS Rocket homer would even consider Lowry for MVP.

maybe not MVP, but how crazy would it be to have starting pgs on the same franchise win Most Improved in back to back years?

i'm sure it's been discussed on these boards already. who else is in the running for MIP this year? any clear favorites? my brain is too fried to think right now.

OMG, so what if you found a supporting article. Quit trying to convince us that Lowry "should be part of the MVP discussion."

The article has at least 50 words in it. How can you expect us to read? What are you, some sort of teacher? This is 'Merica, make a movie or at least a podcast and maybe we'll check it out.

I hope that was sarcasm... my patience is running thin.

In no way does this article say that Kyle is an MVP candidate... it simply discusses his and Rose's contribution to their teams.

I am really considering the idea of never posting anything I find in the GARM because 90% of the people don't think or read before they post. They simply react.

    ....not anywhere near MVP.

MVP of Rockets. Our best player possibly (Well Martin only plays on one side of the court)

It's kind of amazing. And it's unfortunate too because that was a great read.

He should definitely be in consideration, as well as, Adelman for Coach of the Year and Chuck Hayes for All Defensive Team.

In all seriousness Hayesfan, I don't understand what WP means, and I don't think I agree with it as a stat if three Bulls players are ahead of Rose. So, I can't say the article really means anything to me other than the writer trying to state a case for why Rose shouldn't be the MVP.

WP is an overall player efficiency stat like PER. LeBron, CP3, Howard routinely lead the league in WP. It's a good stat because it dispels myths like "Carmelo Anthony is something more than a slightly above average player" and "Rose is on the same level as LeBron, CP3, and Howard."

The reason Rose is going to be MVP is not because he is the best player in the league.

He will win MVP because he is the best player on one of the best teams.

    Other good teams' best players:

    Boston: no MVP candidates
    San Antonio: no MVP candidates
    LA Lakers: Kobe Bryant
    Dallas: Dirk Nowitzki
    Miami: Lebron James
    Orlando: Dwight Howard
    OKC: Kevin Durant

So that leaves the race between Rose, Kobe, Nowitzki, James, Howard, and Durant.

Reasons why these guys are not MVP--

James--Miami has underachieved with their stars. The voters are unlikely to give the MVP to the best player on an underachieving team.

Howard--Howard has been great. However, Orlando is in 4th place in the East.

Durant--This season is worse than last year for him. Also, the Thunder are only in 4th place despite high expectations.

Bryant--The Lakers only recently started picking up steam in the playoff race. Bryant has been good but not nearly as good as what we have been accustomed to.

Nowitzki--He was playing fantastic for awhile, but then he got injured. His stats dropped off a bit after the fast start and his MVP candidacy dropped with it.

Note: Amare Stoudemire was a good candidate for awhile, but the Knicks' record has plummeted since.

Reason why Derrick Rose is the MVP:

Derrick Rose is clearly the best player on an overachieving team. He is putting up great stats, and he is leading his team to one of the top seeds in the conference. He may not be the best player in the league, but this year he has been good enough to be MVP.

Steve Nash became MVP through a similar experience. Phoenix overachieved to become the top seed in the West, and Nash was clearly their best player. That gave him the MVP. Then, the next year, he improved his stats and had team success without Amare Stoudemire.

For what its worth, a lot of people in the "advanced stats" community -- including some NBA execs like Mark Cuban -- think Wins Produced is a bunch of garbage.

There's an article by David Lewin and Dan Rosenbum (both are adjusted +/- advocates and I believe work for NBA teams) that critiqued the WP metric. See their slide show and paper for more details.

Thanks for those durvasa. I had not read that paper before :)

The biggest problem I think I have with WP is the "average position" portion of it.

Yeah, I know that; I meant I don't understand why it's even a stat, like we need yet another efficiency stat. And how is it different than the original Win Shares. btw: Rose is #6 in the league in Win Shares.
