I have been looking at WP7 and Android as a dev platform and WP7 is a bit behind. I dropped looking at WP7 after the April tools refresh, but it was lacking a bunch of stuff that may or may not be implemented. The biggest to me were: - No built in database option -- there are sqllite ports - No programatic access to PIM information (can't access the contacts, phone history, email, etc programtically) - No daemons/services/background processes. This goes in line with Apple's policies/standards. - App store processes and procedures not 100% defined. No guarantees and timelines. Requires a $100 yearly fee for dev's ... even if you just submit free apps. - No enterprise options to application deployment (all apps must be published to the store to be installed). There are some exclusions for dev reasons, but they're temporary. Skype announced that they will not release a WP7 application. Big thing for me. But, I'm also looking to see what Google will release with their Gizmo5 acquisition. The EVO UI does give a little bit of a Windows Mobile 6.5 feel. I think that the huge screen makes the UI look a little different (changing the grid ratio for icons). Android 2.1 supports Exchange ActiveSync wipe and password policies, so there will probably be a larger adoption in the corporate world starting in the next few months. Plus the capability to publish self signed apps (no go with WP7 and iPhone) will allow "internal apps". I have a Zune HD and love the interface. I think that it would be good for a phone interface. But, overall, I think I am going to go Android for my next phone. If only Sprint had one year contracts (even Verizon does for + $30 on the price of the phone).
That's what I'm kinda afraid that WP7 might be heading the same direction as Apple. But I'll give them 6 more months and see what happen. I mean I'm fine with android but it's the UI that's really turning me off and keeping me away.
Just an fyi...seems that Sprint is now pushing out Android 2.2 on the Evo. Ran the update manually... ~84 MB download.
This is driving me CRAZY. Went to Florida for vacation last week, and of course took my junky Samsung Instinct into the pool with me, so that died a horrible death. However, not to worry, Aug 1st was my 2-year upgrade date, so yay, I get to get the EVO!! Errrr NO. Why? Because there AREN'T ANY ANYWHERE!!! GRRRRRRR Come ON Sprint!! Get your buttocks in gear and get the phones out there!! People are BEGGING to spend this ridiculous money with you!!! COME ON COME ON COME ON!!! Also, FYI, $299 and then a $100 rebate kind of sucks, very expensive for a phone, but I am still gonna do it. BUT if you go and get it at Sam's, they sell it to you for $200 and you don't have to fiddle with the rebate. So I am waiting for a call from Sam's that they have one for me.. this waiting is KILLING me.
Dude, do not fiddle with mail in rebates. Do a hard search on Radio Shacks in your area. If you live in a large market, with several radio shacks, one is bound to get a phone in. Just ask to be put on a waiting list at several stores till the first one calls you back. Save yourself 100 dollars up front. When I bought they did the free 20.00 in accessories also, not sure if they are still doing this, but they do have the 10.00 dollar complete this survey at the bottom of the receipt so put it towards a car charger, because you are going to need it once 4g hits. On a side note, I downloaded 2.2 and what a pure delectable pleasure it is. Benchmarking on Linpack for android my average speed went from about a .86 seconds to an average of .14 seconds. I also nearly tripled my score on Quadrant. Finally started getting some bars of 4g here in Orlando and have to admit its real nice and fast. Also, now they got rid of that silly "uploads disabled" function that wouldnt allow you to upload pictures from your phone to a website. Finally i can browse the web anywhere and not worry about flash not playing since flash 10.1 was incorporated. The only serious gripe I have is that the 30 fps cap is still intact on the phone. I understand HTCs response as to why its there, but it sucks and it needs to be gone now. Supposedly HTC is working on a update fix for this. GET IT DONE HTC.
so the external speaker is blown on my evo... i have the white one from best buy and they told me they would only exchange for a new one if i had the original box, i threw that TRASH away weeks ago. total BS because I was going to another best buy store in town for the quick exchange. so no sprint says they'll send me a replacement, but i want my white one back....Best Buy's policy is total BS. and Nero, the Best Buy Meyerland has EVOs in stock FYI
I don't know about that bro, my friend works at sprint and he cant even order them. (back order) the chick i talked to earlier that fed me that BS is an idiot. i called back and asked "to speak with a male in mobile" and the guy said i could exchange the phone but he just reserved the others for other customers. all because some b**** screwed me over, i have to wait for a phone call to exchange for a new one. FML
If you like a brick feel with hard edges and volume buttons that came off a startac. Lol. Old iPhone were nice looking. The new ones with the metal slab encompassing it are hideous to feel.
Got my EVO yesterday. The guy at the Sprint store @ Willowbrook helped set it up, showed me some cool things and started the download of the 2.2. Got that installed last night, and am only now really starting to dig into the joy. So, I guess one of the big questions now is: what are some of you guys' favorite apps? Most useful, most fun, most awesome, etc etc? I confess, I spent about 10 minutes yesterday flicking wads of paper into a trash can, and it was hilariously cool. I know there is supposed to be some kind of 'program-kill' app out there that is like a must-have, but I don't remember the name. Also wondering if Swype is going to be worth it.. Anyway, got it finally, of course would have preferred to get it from Sam's or somewhere like that to avoid having to wait for the rebate, but oh well. Now THIS phone, I do not plan on taking into the pool with me...
Enjoy man. Some apps I use are 1. Talk to me cloud. It voice recognizes your input and speaks the translation in several languages. 2. Shazam. Recognizes songs being played and gives you info on song. 3. Not call log. For those who don't back all the way out after a call and end up accidentally pocket dialing. 4. Dolphin browser HD. Best internet browser with many adds ons. Similar to a mobile version of FireFox. 5. Bump. Share any song, pic contact info with a bump of phones. 6. Imusic. Best free mp3 download service. Not available on market. Go to www.greencode.me or you can download tunee music from market. 7. Mixzing music player. Downloads album cover for you if you use your phone to download music without covers. Also has a nice graphic equalizer and if prompted will play similar music upon a selection of song. 8. Ringdroid. Allows you to chop a song as you like and set it as a ringtone. 9. Where's my Droid. If you lose your phone it due to it being on silent you can send your phone a text and it will ring on max volume. 10. Tikl. Touch to talk between other users. Kinda like a Nextel type service that doesn't use your minutes or data to speak to each other. 11. Linda or astro. Both very good file managers.
I use advanced task killer but it hasn't updated for froyo. I don't use apps really, but I do have swype... Love this phone
i have the old version of shazam. there is no limit to the amount of tags . i will gladly email anyone the the .all if they need. just make sure that you never updated it. i also have the swype .apk. swype takes a little getting used to but once you master it it's a lot easier then typing for the letters .
sorry for the massive bump. just don't think a new thread should be started with every new phone that comes out. evo3d just announced today. phone specs are just ridiculous. battery should be better than most android phones (because of dual core and bigger battery). surprised that they managed to keep it the same size (actually just an eenzie beetzy bit smaller). http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/22/htc-evo-3d-officially-announced-for-sprint/ and yes... the back of the phone looks like one of those cassettes that pops out of soundwave's chest (laserbeak, rumble, ravage, etc).
Should be a nice phone, but 3d is too gimmicky for me. Sprint users, you should pick this up The battery 1750mah is nice for stock. The specs are impressive though, except Wi-max.
