I tried to find Fatty's thread..........did a search for "El Real", "Reef," "Caswell," and "walsh." Couldn't find it. Did anyone go? How was it? What's their website again? My "search" fingers are typing poorly today.
The reviews on Yelp aren't too encouraging, but that's not unexpected for the first week. Apparently Walsh made an ass of himself to some customers.
does anyone else find it interesting that a dude named "pole" starts a thread about a "soft opening"?
With the hype and names behind this place, the owners could all be douchenozzles and still succeed with flying colors.
wow, some harsh reviews on yelp. Makes me think twice about going. This was supposed to fill the void that was left by the closing of Felix. Sounds like a massive FAIL. From the reviews, it sounds like they went a bit too San Antonio with the food . . .
any restaurant coming in with that much hype is bound to underwhelm. likewise, i never really liked the "old school" tex-mex of felix's et al. it just isn't very good. nostalgic? sure. but tasty? hardly. once i found out that the concept for el real was basically felix's i lost a lot of interest. i'll still go but i'm not expecting to be impressed.
Had dinner there Saturday night for a suprise party, so didnt get the full menu, but did get a decent sample of the main items. The queso and guacamole were pretty good. Wasn't blown away by the fajita meat/tortillas, but it wasnt bad. Margaritas were pretty standard as well. All in all, worth checking out again, but nothing that you cant find at other mexican restaurants in Houston.
I read one guy's lengthy review two days ago where Walsh apparently said "Well our food isn't for everyone" and now it seems to be gone! Can/should Yelp just completely delete reviews like that?
It's still there, it got popped by the review filter: http://officialblog.yelp.com/2009/10/why-yelp-has-a-review-filter.html If you scroll down to the bottom of El Real's page, you can see a link to show you the filtered reviews.
