You do realize the Rockets have Bird rights on Chuck and can sign him to the max salary if they really wanted to, right? At least under the current rules. From a cap room standpoint, I don't think the "Miller vs. Chuck" thing is an issue. The Rockets may not have all that much cap room this offseason, anyway; and Miller basically comes off the books (save for $878k) in 2012. So, don't let the money Brad Miller's making trouble you when it comes to keeping Chuck Hayes.
I think the Rockets try hard to keep Chuck. He is better than Battier has been for a while. I think it is way too early to tell what Chuck Hayes gets as the new CBA will probably change the economics of the game as I expect the exceptions will be reduced.

I really hope the GMs of OTHER teams think like some of you guys here. I hope they still think Chuck is an UNDERSIZED whatever, and that he has no offense. I hope he is still the best kept secret in the NBA despite game after game like last night's. I don't think anybody in the Rockets FO thinks like that. I definitely believe Morey doesn't think like that. But Morey is known to play hard ball at contract negotiation. If other GMs miss out, he'll lowball Hayes. But if other GMs understand the real value of Chuck Hayes, Morey will have to pay up.
If the Rockets can find a taker for Miller, I want them to make that trade and give Chuck a Collison-like contract. There is absolutely no one I want this offseason for a long term deal with big money. But I really want cap flexibility for 2012. I know it's a big stretch that we can land a top FA in 2012. But the odds aren't any worse than tanking and hoping you can land the next superstar in the draft.
So we give the 35-year old Brad Miller $5 million per year, but not sure if Chuck Hayes is worth that much? Wow!
7th year and he can make a shot all of a sudden? I'd be wary that it's a contract year and most likely the last significant deal of his career.
Brad is essentially an expiring contract next season, i'd be surprised if he wasn't traded in the offseason and beyond shocked if he was still here after the deadline next season. Chuck will probably get between 3-4 million for about 4 years with an option thrown in there. My worry is performances like last night will have teams like Boston and Chicago willing to overpay for his defense.
I do not want a 6'6 center. KG is pretty much a Jump shooter. Anybody who has skills in the post will abuse CH.
Is he worth the MLE? Of course. He is an above average NBA center. Should we give him the MLE? No. I don't think teams like Boston/Dallas/San An/Miami would throw their entire MLE at him and don't think teams outside of those would really need him.

I do not think that Morey tries to low-ball Chuck Hayes. It is my opinion that Hayes gets market value, whatever the market dictates. Let's be real here. How many teams are going to make Hayes a focal point of their team? Not many. Hayes is playing defense. And he is being efficient overall... He is getting 7.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1 steal a game. Those numbers are worthy of MLE. If he were to get that type of deal, I would not be upset, nor would a lot of y'all. But I think that Morey doesn't get emotional. He stays to his plan. And isn't going to mortgage the future for anyone other than a super star!!!
Agreed. Morey does not make lowball offers. He is a big believer in the free market and prefers to let the market set a player's value in negotiations. The "lowball" myth stems from his negotiations with Carl Landry, but Carl still had much to prove when his unusually short rookie contract was up. The deals Scola and Lowry received were certainly not lowball offers. I'd prefer not to discuss Brad Miller, but Morey has shown a knack for fixing his mistakes.
If we make the playoffs Chuckie will probably get MLE money. If we beat the Spurs in the first round Chuckie will definitely get MLE money. If we make it the finals Chuckie will get more than MLE money.
That's an interesting thought, but I think Morey would prefer not to tie up any prospective cap room with such a deal. Unlike with the Collison situation (where the cap room was only going to help OKC up to the trade deadline), starting off an OFFSEASON by using up all of your cap room does not strike me as a "Morey move." Daryl likes having maximum flexibility. Now, if Chuck is willing to be patient and possibly even risk losing out on maximizing his market value, I could possibly see Morey doing this, say, at the tail end of the free agency period (whenever that is) IF the team can't find a better use for its cap room or cap exceptions.
Chuck is a center in name only. The way I see it, we're starting 2 PFs and Chuck is more often asked to guard the opposing center because of his strength. Actually, Chuck will guard whoever the tougher matchup is, generally.
where will they have room? They have Asik and Noah at Center. Boozer and Gibson at PF. Where does he fit?
