I know plenty of black people who are smart but are not called uncle tom's or oreo's. It's not about being smart it's just how you carry yourself.

When people get offended when someone says a black person is acting white or vice versa I always think to myself so do you think there is no cultural difference? Growing up in Middle School and some in High School we would say that black girl or black guy acts white just by how she carried herself or himself.

So Jalen apologized because he knew the way he presented it was offensive.

Yet the way he presented it wasn't a mistake.

    Sure.

the funny thing is, most people who found it "offensive" are white. and I think that's because a lot don't understand the context of where rose is coming from

It was a basketball documentary. About the feelings and motivations of this team. How boring and uninsightful it would have been if he had to water down every comment for sensibilities, and frame context in terms of socio economic considerations and reflections on the obstacles facing black youth all backed up by peer reviewed studies. Leave that for someone who actually completes college.

Hill's response was warranted too. He was dished (directly or indirectly) -- and he spoke up for himself and his family. Cool. I particularly liked the reference to never having lost to the fab 5.

I just don't see a big deal here -- except by those who want to make it one.

The 'perception of success' and race/economic biases etc are all legit issues. But such a small part of this particular piece. Me thinks.

I guess I don't really understand what we're supposed to be D&Ding here. This is basically turning into the same thread as the one in the NBA Dish.

Just with regards to Duke and Battier, if you're going to celebrate ANY college basketball program, doesn't it HAVE to be Duke? I mean, I hate them as much as anyone else, I'm a 'Nova guy, I hate everyone in the ACC. But they've had more success than any other program in the last twenty or so years, and it's at an elite university.

And of course the media and fans are going to love a guy like Battier. He's a smart, unselfish player who's "well-spoken". Which basically means he knows how to play the media. And most fans are idiots and outside of their own team they'll root for whoever the writers tell them to.

If someone thinks Jalen Rose, as a 38 year old man, thinking that way is 'ok', then that's pretty sad.

Yeah yeah we get it, we're not black so we don't understand the struggle.

but no one thinks he thinks that way as a 38 year old man, you're only saying that to support your "outrage".

donny does this in other threads, tries to set the base to keep up his argument, that's fine we all have our styles

Dude, the public having to wonder aloud whether Jalen Rose still feels this way as a full grown adult is a huge part of the reason everybody is discussing it.

What 'outrage'? And you don't have to talk about me in the 3rd person, I'm right here.

no, the reason people are discussing it is because of the use of the term "uncle tom"

Well I'm white, grew up poor, was homeschooled throughout grade school by radical fundamentalist parents which disallowed me from receiving any scholarship opportunities, subsequently I am financing my own college education and hope to graduate with a Bachelor's Degree next Fall from the University of Houston.

So do I hate the rich white kid who is going to A&M on his parents dime? Sure. But we're talking about different worlds here I suppose.

All Jalen had to do was admit he was being a hater and owned up his youthful ignorance and I would have had respect for his honesty.

    No kidding.

And this discussion would be far more muted.

He dun goofed, and refused to acknowledge that consequences would never be the same, now the cyber police are in an uproar.

I didn't find Rose's comments surprising. Duke is an elite university and as such participates in the education inequities in this country. An educational inequity that racial minorities and the poor bear the brunt of. Duke is at the end of the production line, so they didn't cause the problem, but they (and Harvard and U of C and the others) are taking the academically elite kids from the country's high schools. Those kids are going to be drawing better salaries on average and be in a higher social class than their Michigan counterparts. If a person identifies themselves with the poor black population that is being mis-served by the country's broken educational system, it's not surprising they would be offended to see someone they thought shared an allegiance with them to willingly throw their hat in with an organization (Duke) that embodies the injustice that poor inner-city blacks can't go to elite institutions because they don't receive the educational support that well-to-do suburbanites get in their childhoods. I think his anger is misdirected, but I can empathize.

    You must not be married.

Well he did admit to being a hater.

The only thing he hasn't done is clarify exactly how he feels about it at the age of 38 but he pretty admitted he was jealous and a hater 20 years ago.
