Hey, I have nothing against him. I get 18 yr olds always say dumb things, myself included. Doesn't mean they were any less dumb. And it doesn't mean he or I were any braver. Why do I have to agree with those statements he made?
When I was 18 I felt like Grant Hill was a bat-child brought from another planet by a prehistoric stork-man. REAL TALK!
You guys should watch the first and ten interview with jalen...he still feels that duke recruits the "Uncle Tom" type players. He made some justification that he was young and dumb back then, but he isn't backing off too much from his comments...he still clearly feels the same way. He understands why Duke recruits those types of players...but he still categorizes those types of black individuals.
Jalen is sipping Haterade hardcore and Grant Hill had to take him out behind the barber shop and show him what a pimp hand smacks like. IRONIC!
You look at Hill nowadays, on the court, bench, of the court, he's just great. He is to the NBA what Battier was/is to Houston. On top of that, he's a great athlete. Nothing but respect for Grant.
Grant Hill absolutely cremated those fools. I don't think I have ever seen such a perfect, classy response. That was a joy to read
I thought Jalen was honest in the Fab Five doc. He said he 'thought' they were Uncle Toms when he was @ Michigan. He obviously doesn't think that now. I can see how Jalen could think such things coming out of High school especially where and how he grew up. Jalen even said he was angry at Grant because he was jealous; He wanted what Grant Hill had. Good article from Grant Hill. Cant wait for the Op-ed piece from Christian Laettner about being a p***y.
Gentlemen, all Jalen Rose had to do was add that he now realizes the way he felt back then was dead wrong. It was a "teachable moment" where he could have refuted the whole idiotic concept that being gifted, successful and non-dysfunctional means a black person is "acting white" or is an "Uncle Tom". But he did not. Deliberately. It would have been a grand slam home-run if he had. But Jalen Rose is what he is = pathetic. rocketsmetalspd, to your other statement, to this day I have NEVER forgotten that foul on Elie and it has colored my opinion of Jalen Rose since. His lack of remorse was chilling. Just amazing. And this clown is now on WSPN and expects me to listen to his phony nonsense.
Stop with that mess, Jalen IS hood-tight on the shnizzle for real B! YOU HERD?? You an uncle-tom fo sho if you like Duke or Grant HILL. Thems READ BOOKS. trying to be all SMARTY ART ***** Call that timeout Chris, call it!
I wasn't aware that most blacks from the ghetto felt that way. I didn't (from the ghetto). Most of my friends from the ghetto didn't either.
It should be noted that Jalen Rose's use of the term "uncle tom" is slightly adjusted from its original use. I'm pretty sure when the term was coined it wasn't meant to describe african americans from middle class families. Just another example of how he is an uneducated, ignoramus who was hating on people of his own race that had made a better life for themselves. Isn't that what all african americans need to be doing? Discouraging the self-betterment of any black person?!?! Also, wasn't Jalen Rose the fool who proclaimed in 2008 that the Knicks would land Lebron, Bosh, and Nash?
Wouldn't surprise me if Jalen Rose and Grant Hill have some public moment where they shake hands and smooth things over. I say this because Grant Hill's response buries Rose so much that he might need to do something in order to remain a semi-credible ESPN figure.
Rose is partially wrong and partially right. The term that he used is insulting and he is wrong for that. However, what he said about Duke only recruiting a certain type of kid seems to be correct, i.e. not kids from the hood like him (for whatever reasons). That's probably why you don't hear about Duke players taking large sums of $$ from folks. Remove the "Uncle Tom" part, which he was completely wrong for saying, and he has a point.
Rose's mindset - that wealth and education and two parent families are indicative of "whiteness" - is far too prevalent in much of the black community.
