Sorry, I know this is a bit off topic BUT if any of you aquarium enthusiast are interested, I am looking to sell my 10 gallon aquarium. The tank itself, hood, filter have been replaced and are all new. It is fully equipped with everything you need and extras. I did a lot of research and readying before setting up this tank. Looking to sell for $100 but can negotiate. Pic of the gear not including the tank+hood+gravel (black) This is what my old tank looked like... I started off with Serpae and Neon Tetras Then I got into guppies cause I heard they were really prolific. I started breeding them and here are some of the fry. Very enjoyable experience, but I am in need of some money right now. =( Let me know if any of yall are interested.
Well it depends on what you want to go for. Just fish, lots of color, etc. Remember, you need to cycle the tank first and usually what I do is buy 3-4 danios or mollies and let them stay for 2 weeks. That's what I'd start with.
Thanks, LP- I'm going to throw some Java ferns and moss in and see how it takes. I'd still like to move up to a premium uber-filter. Any recommendations?
OK, it sounds as if you want a premium filter and don't mind spending the extra money to get one, correct? If so, I would go with a canister filter these can be intimidating for some as they are more pricey and complex than HOB or UG filters but you already stated this isn't a bother. I have always heard good thing about Eheim products, especially the classic series. I have a friend who has an Eheim Classic 2217 setup on on his 55 gallon and it works beautifully, in fact he can go almost a month without doing water changes. Now, he also has a Coralife TurboTwist UVS setup for UV sterilization and I am sure that helps with some of the clarity issues as well because it eliminates algae and other organisms that make a tank dirty looking. Together, those would cost you more than the $200 you want to spend, I'd say around $250 but it is the setup he has. Here is a pic of his tank but it is dated but it still looks this good: So I would go with a Eheim canister filter if it were me but it is just a suggestion. He also has a CO2 setup for his plants but if you wanted, you can do a cheap DIY CO2 setup that would need to be changed out every 2-3 weeks, which is what I do. If you want more info on that just let me know. Hope this helps, if you need more info just say it.
There's a Eheim Classic 2217 on Craigslist fairly close to me for $75. It's a year old. How do these things age? Should I buy new for $159 from Amazon instead? link
A good filter can last more than a decade. I've never had experience with this model but my friend has had his for nearly 5 years with no worries.
Got a Green Terror,...Had him for 2 months, and I think he grew 2inches already...He is Constantly hungry. getting large very fast. NOT aggressive, as has been their rep...but maybe later Very cool fish.
LP - thanks again for the advice. I did some reading and your friend's setup is spot on. I just ordered the Eheim 2217 classic and 9w Coralife Turbo-Twist from BigAlsOnline for $211 shipped (awesome prices, BTW, and 10% off everything right now). Side note- my big silver dollar has been slowly nibbling down the Java Fern I put in. I guess he didn't read about silver dollars not liking java ferns.
Great news!!! Hopefully I can get my aquariums going again once I get back from New Orleans.....if I have the time.
Well, I've had the Eheim 2217 classic and 9w Coralife Turbo-Twist in for about a week now. I still have my Penguin 350 going as well to make sure the bacteria make a nice home in the new filter. Tank is crystal clear. I should note that the first day I had the setup going, I went on a work call for several hours and my power was out due to a storm. Had my two biggest Silver Dollars die, so the bio-load has got to be lower now. But I'm super satisfied with the purchase so far. I'll know for sure once I take the Penguin 350 out if it can handle everything, but I'm pretty stoked. Thanks again for the advice, LP.
I have a 10 gallon aquarium with a 20 gallon filteration system that I got from Petsmart with plants, filters, rocks and other stuff. I'll let it go for $20 if you come pick it up. Its just sitting there. Email me through the board...and its yours.
Yep- water crystal clear, fish happy! The setup you recommended was well worth the money. I took the penguin OTB filter out months ago. I added a powerhead and a couple of bubble wands to help with gas exchange. I'm thinking of taking the herbivores out so I can get some plants in. I'll post some pics when I get the chance. Thanks again for the help, LP! Hopefully you can get something going again soon!
My 9w Coralife Turbo-Twist went down a few weeks back and it took almost three weeks to get the replacement in on warranty. Wow, being without that thing really shows how much it does- the water got dirty looking and started to cloud up. I put the replacement in, crystal clear water in two days. I'd say it's a must for any aquarium...even with an OTB filter, you could rig something up with some powerheads and tubing.
