I would definitely die for the last person on Earth.

(Be careful, that paradox could make your head explode.)

Faced with a situation where I could give my life to guarantee the saving of another, I'd like to think that I'd do it. Never been faced with such a situation, however. I'd be leaving my wife and children behind but I don't suppose I'd have much time to think about that...I'm assuming we're talking about an instant, emergency situation, not a drawn out decision process.

I guess my answer is one.

You'd give up your life for one person you don't even know? You are a better person than I am, sir.

I help at a crisis nursery (kids 0-6yrs old) in a seedy part of town. The kids come from not so great places -- so I've actually thought about this.

We don't know for sure what we'd do until the situation confronts us but I've already convinced myself that no matter what the odds against me no one is touching the kids in my care without going through me (however insignificant of a challenge that would be)

Then you are already giving some of your life to save others'.

    Good on you.

    2, without thought.

Reasoning. Been around the sun a few more times so yielding to the young is not a problem.

    What if... ...

    You don't die

But it leaves you paralyzed or any other serious unrecoverable injury.....

And later on you found out the person you saved turned out to be a major disappointment....

    Would you regret it?

I absolutely would regret it...but it wouldn't/doesn't change my views. However, my reasoning in this thread is more selfish than it appears on the surface, I assure you. I don't have a death-wish anymore, but some of the feelings still linger.

Like RP and Ceasar, I'd like to think in an emergency, crisis situation the number might be 1.

But if I get a call while I'm sitting on the couch to give up my life so that a dozen or so people I don't know can be saved, I'd probably decline.

Food for thought, how many people do you think would be saved by donating to local or overseas charities?

If I died saving 10 people, I'd say that was for a good cause.
