^^^ No offense intended, robbie. I do see that the Times rewrote the lede, from the same link as above. It now seems slightly less alarmist ("verged toward catastrophe" rather than "likelihood of"): [rquoter]Japan’s nuclear crisis verged toward catastrophe on Tuesday, after an explosion at one crippled reactor damaged its crucial steel containment structure and a fire at another reactor spewed large amounts of radioactive material into the air, according to official statements and industry executives informed about the developments. [...] Officials said emergency efforts to pump seawater into three stricken reactors at the plant were continuing, but that most of the 800 workers at the Daiichi facility had been told to leave to avoid exposure to unhealthy levels of radiation at the plant. They said 50 workers would remain at the plant to pump seawater into three reactors and fight the fire at the fourth reactor. [/rquoter] I was just reading the Wikipedia on Chernobyl, in which many engineers sacrificed their lives to try to limit the disaster.
guarantee it. Betting on toycen to start a thread a year from now about some type of conspiracy with these meltdowns.
Cham. Thinkin of takin a trip to Okinawa. Some of my friends are on their way to Osaka. what u think?
I was just thinking about how heroic those engineers still working at the plant are. It's a death sentence for them. I hope they can stop this tragedy from getting worse.
Yeah...Okinawa is pretty far away from all this. My wife and Kids are there now and there is no word of evacuations or any sense that those would happen from the Military. Okinawa should be a good place to head at this point. But who knows if that statement can be said a month from now to be honest.
Seems like a good FAQ from the Something Awful forums regarding the events at the nuclear plant: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3396817 Spoiler Didn't include any links in my quote (saw some good references to how radiation is measure, and what the effects are of various doses). Check out that thread for more, including links to other references.
Seems as though donations to Japan are low compared to recent disasters like the quake in Haiti. I encourage you all to donate somehow or another if you can. Thanks.
The 50 remaining workers leaving the plant now, radiation level gettin outta control. Fear of meltdown in 4 reactors.
I think everyone is in shell shock right now. Once everyone gets a hold of themselves, and the damage is finally completely assessed; aid will pour in quick.
It's more that the majority considers japanese people wealthy. Sounds harsh but the level of money around the population isn't as low as in countries like Hawaii or Indonesia, Thailand,... People don't want to donate money to people that have average income.
I think it's that, and there are some deep-seeded prejudices against Japan- WWII propaganda (my grandmother still calls them Japs), and anti-foreign goods campaigns like 'Buy American' we saw a lot in the 70s-90s. Still, these people need help. Red Cross food tastes like the best steak ever if you're hungry enough. If you can afford to help, please do so. If not, it's understandable.
Multiple sources say the last 50 workers are moving out of the area and they wanna try cooling via helicopters from now.
