My curiosity is peaked. They blew on SNL but kinda wanna hear the new album. Link me up however. Email, etc. whatever works please?
So first impressions, I think its a very solid album. Definitely not on the level of Is This It but I'm very satisfied with it. They definitely seem to be trying to form a different sound but it works really well on songs like Machu Picchu. I would tentitively rank Angles 3rd best after Is this It and Room on Fire, but this album seems like it has potential to grow on me.
http://new.thestrokes.com/featured/listen-to-angles-here whole album streaming on their website BTW, its really good. Not their best, but good, best since is This It IMO
I'm certainly not disappointed with the album, but based on one listen, not as amazing as I hoped. But, The Strokes have always been one of those bands that songs got even better with repeated listening, for me. Maybe I'll like it better in the future. I do think "Life is Simple in the Moonlight" is a very pretty song though.

In regards to that NME piece, not to surprised. During those making of videos, you never saw Julian, resulting in fans asking where the hell he was. But.... During some of Julian's interviews, during his Phrazes promotion, he kind of expressed his enjoyment with the singular process of making an album. And hinted that he was the one who wanted to go straight into making a new album, after FIOE, and that it was some of the other guys who didn't want to. I wonder if these guys really hang out that much outside of the recording/promotion/touring process? Many interviews during album breaks, with mention of them not really seeing each other in a long time.
To answer that I know they had scrapped an earlier version of 'Angles' with another producer that consisted primarily of Julian pre-recorded instumentals that the band had completed beforehand. They hated what they heard, fired their producer, and started over again. I still weren't in the studio together much of the time but their was more back and forth with the songs.
Well, THe Whole band almost went solo. Julian went on his own to make an album Hammond's been making solo stuff Fabrizio has Little Joy. Nikolai has Nickel Eye. I do hope the solo stuff was just a way of releasing steam and they rededicate to the collective.
I caught them live at MSG on April 1. It was an EPIC homecoming show! They completely killed it. They pulled an april fools gag by having Elvis Costello coming out as a surprise opener doing a 3-song set. Then, later in the show, Julian joked about how cool it would be if Elvis came back and did a song with them. And .. april fools! He comes out and does one of their new songs with them! I'm loving the new album, it definitely grows on you after a couple listens. <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/X92Cwsoos38" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
