This is all via AT&T uverse. I'm late to the PS3 party. I popped in KillZone 2 for the first time: PS3 says I need to download a 90mb update to get the firmware to version 3.6. After an hour, it was only at 45%, and then it crapped out and gave me an error message. I Googled around for a bit, but didn't find anything very helpful other than a bunch of people complaining about the same thing. I've tried both wireless and wired: Wireless, my PS3 says I only have 55% signal strength while my wifi laptop, which is five feet from my PS3, hums along nicely. My wireless source is only ~25 feet away. I'm in the process of trying the download again (wired, this time) where it's currently crawling at 26% after half an hour. I don't online-game or use the PS3's browser, so I don't know if it's slow across the board or just with downloading updates. Do I need to open a port/forward a port? I have no idea how to do this with uverse. Does port forwarding matter if the connection is wired? I also read something about changing the DNS to Primary: 8.8.8.8 and the Secondary to: 8.8.4.4. I'm capable of doing this but it's really over my head as to what it means. Would this even make a difference with a wired connection? One of you smart people must have the answer.... Thanks in advance. Also: I did the "easy" internet configuration because all of the options under "custom" are way over my head....but I'm open to learning if someone can dumb it down for me.
Stick with wired if it's not inconvenient for you, and yes, port forwarding still matters for wired connections. http://portforward.com/routers.htm Pick out your router from that list, then on the list after that choose "Playstation Network." Then follow the directions (including setting up a static IP). That may or may not help, but it sure can't hurt. I've definitely noticed some downloads on PSN are very slow where others are fine. My best guess for why this happens is that they put "higher priority" data like paid content or patches for the latest titles on more and better servers, while stuff like demos and older patches get lumped onto the crappier ones. That's just a guess though.
If you just got your ps3, the first system update will take quite a while. The wait for them to finish is pretty annoying though, but it will get better. The best thing I ever did was set it up so that it updates automatically, if only the same worked for the games.
yeah the firmware updates can be slow. You may want to try downloading them onto a USB drive and installing that way: http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/
I did both of the above, and the PSN Store seems to run no problem. Then again, I'd never actually signed into it until today, but creating the account went without a hitch, though I haven't tried to actually download anything else yet. I still don't have any interest in online gaming at this point, but the DLC certainly looks worth the trouble of creating the account, so I'll be downloading stuff as I finish games. Anyway. Thanks for the help, y'all. Yeah....but what I don't get is why? It was only a 90mb file. Why is waiting an hour + for a 90mb file something anyone should have to endure? Even with a zillion people online it shouldn't take that long, or am I just overestimating the tech?
PS3's wireless is somewhat crappy, in my experience. Drexlerfan is right though; if you can port forward it should help. But yeah, in general updating the PS3 can be pretty annoying. don't forget that, while it's not going to have Call of Duty numbers of people online, killzone is still a relatively new game. May be some traffic.
Game updates are worse. I'm trying to download 608 MB of updates for Gran Turismo 5 and I've been waiting for about an hour it's at 33%.
