1 or 2 picks isn't much difference? I can give you several examples why it is a huge difference in recent history.

2007-Morey chooses Brooks with the 26th pick. Had he gotten the 24th pick, he would have picked Rudy Fernandez.

2008-They wanted the 22nd pick to get Courtney Lee. However, they were at 25, acquired more assets to drop to 28 and get Donte Greene.

Now, in 2010, it wasn't much of a difference picking at 14 rather than 9 or 10. But you never know how the draft will turn out. It could potentially be HUGE. From memory, I remember that Danny Granger was picked at 17 and John Stockton at 16. You don't want to be picking one pick after someone like that is picked off.

We are assuming that the Suns make a run and that Memphis drops in these scenarios (which is unlikely IMO), but it is not much of a stretch to think that NY or PHI could make a run also if that happens. They have close to the same record as Phoenix.

I did not realize the Rockets would receive a 2nd round pick +3 million. Plus I thought it would last till 2020. I was wrong. I must've been looking at someone's conjecture before the real news came out.

Your analysis makes complete sense. Thanks.

The Rockets have 6 years for that draft pick. Now given that we talking about Memphis, we should root for them to make the playoffs since they rarely do, but in the cost-benefit scheme, you root for Phoenix over Memphis this year.

This is what I'm hoping for. I would love to see a Lowry v AB match-up.

You are assuming the players would be drafted in the same position and that everybody's draftboard is the same. It's like saying the Blazers would draft Jordan, if they had the 3rd pick instead of the 2nd pick.

I remember a thread in a previous draft, where Morey said the picks were he said there was little difference in the 16th-30th picks. He said that the lottery positions are pretty set by the time the draft comes around, a player may move up or down 1-2 spots. In the bottom half, the talent is similiar level simliar and it's harder to predict where players will go. You have proven my point that there is little variation in draft position. Rudy isn't a superstar. Rudy's talent and trade value is about the same as Brooks. It's not a major difference like Greg Monroe or Patrick Patterson.

With Nash out the next two games, we have to win.

This may be our last chance to make the playoffs.

Yep. They'll be at 32 losses if we win tomorrow. Memphis has the Clippers and Knicks coming up. We're still in it.

Gives me some hope. I don't want the season to end with our boys coming up a game or two short of making the post-season. We're not ready to contend, but we can compete.

We would be basically be at the eight spot if Scola didn't get injured. Story of our lives. Inopportune injuries.

as long as there is a chance we should not give up games

Phoenix just lost against Orlando, I don't think Memphis will make the playoffs, nor will Utah...our best bet is hoping that Portland gets cursed in some way or another and we don't play Dallas in the playoffs

And this is why we don't have Brandon Roy and two more championships.

    Alston
    Roy
    McGrady
    Hayes

    Wow, you tankers are relentless.

Life is too short to always wait until next year. You either try to make the 2011 playoffs, or they're gone forever. We live in an ever-changing world not video game dynasty mode. Will you be happy if we tank out of the playoffs and there's a lockout season? We can either play through April or we can give up for two years.

You are a fan, not a GM. You want your team to win at all costs and you trust in your management to pull a trade / upgrade/ what have you in the off-season. If it doesn't happen, you revolt against management, but you don't keep clinging to some misguided anti risk-taking long-term strategy. Sports is about living in the moment; hell they were created as recreation/entertainment. Have we strayed so far that we don't appreciate winning if it's not in line with some sort of higher objective?

There are never any guarantees of anything. There are no guarantees that we would have gotten Brandon Roy. But here is a guarantee: that happened, and we can't rewind. Tough beans.

    /philosophy rant

This. Everybody wants the picks that comes from tanking, but no real fan wants to actually see their team lose game after game and become the laughing stock of the league. All those "fans" who advocate tanking will stop watching Rox games the moment DM blows it all up.

We wouldn't have gotten Battier if we were able to draft Roy, as we traded our draft pick for Shane.

Those of us who want to see the younger players like Patterson and T-will play will enjoy the games even more than watching Scola and Martin. Why even draft them, if they aren't going to be developed? It's wasting a season.

DM doesn't have to blow it up. What's wrong with starting Patterson and benching Scola?
