If I'm reading this map right, I think most of them are built that way: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_in_Japan#Nuclear_Power_Plants
Gotta love the media sensationalism of grossly reporting things like death tolls and the nuclear radiation.
I've been looking at the reporter's tweets(the link is on the first page). They are still experiencing aftershocks, some of them were strong. W7VOA RT @martyn_williams: 70% chance of Magnitude 7-class quake in next three days, 50% chance for three days after that - Japan Met Agency 43 minutes ago Poor Japan can't catch a break.
No idea how they can work right away after what they went through. They were talking about Monday and if people are going to go back to work and etc etc.
Also no riots and civil unrest like you would see in third world countries. Pretty impressive. I wonder if even our country would handle a disaster so well.
Has this been posted? Mind blowing stuff! <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/S35Q5-XPLo0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
interesting... I for one am going to work tomorrow. not too concerned about aftershocks as I am about radiation. http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/03/12/japan.earthquake.tsunami.earth/index.html
[L.A. Times] Scenes of destruction in aftermath of the Japan earthquake - Framework - Photos and Video - Visual Storytelling Just awful.
I heard these new-generation plants are only partially in Scandinavia, rest of the world got the old ones that are not save in situations like earthquakes, etc. 6 of 10 reactors in Fukushima now have not enough cooling, it's getting worse every hour.
USA lost many lives on 9-11-01 and now JAPAN who lost more lives 3-10-11. Add the 2 dates together and you get 12-21-12
Japan definitely has some Generation III(+?) reactors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nuclear_reactors#Japan They might be in a few other areas of the world too. FWIW, I believe the South Texas Nuclear Generating Station (near Bay City, TX) is trying to build 2 new reactors (Advanced Boiling Water Reactors to be specific). Or at least that's what Wikipedia says. Not sure what the current state of the project is, but found that to be interesting. I think the newer generations are better designed to handle LOCA, and I think they might have some better designs against an event like an earthquake (although not 100% sure about that). Though hopefully in this case, that won't really matter. Perhaps a newer design could have just prevented the loss of the unit, but hopefully everything will be contained even with the older design. edit: More reading material for those of you that are interested: http://morgsatlarge.wordpress.com/2011/03/13/why-i-am-not-worried-about-japans-nuclear-reactors/ http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3396092&userid=125658
Are you talking about the united states? Because we have disasters quite often with similar response.
i think he is talking about looting and other crimes. even shoplifting is a rarity here. it still happens but not on the scale of the rest of the world. i know there was a rape in kobe a while back during a natural disaster that hit the kansai area. but it remains to be seen how calm everyone will be if resources become scarcer and if the time comes to evacuate more populated areas like tokyo.
I don't know but looks like Mother Nature is really pissed. Volcano in southern Japan resumes eruptions http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/03/13/international/i080956D86.DTL
Okay now that's creepy! The death toll estimated of 1,000 was too generous. They are saying now 3,000 to 10,000.
sorry meant to say "if". i'm not so sure it will be so calm and orderly when it comes to a more densely populated area like tokyo.
