So, a couple of months ago, my wife notices that there is some water in the tank of our washing machine after it's completed a load of clothes. She's convinced that it's a problem with the washer being old and it's time for a new one. We buy a brand new washer and the problem is happening again. It's a problem because the water sits there for days, causing an odor in the laundry room. Since it's the same thing with 2 different washing machines, it has to be a problem in the drain line, correct? But if the drain line was backed up, wouldn't water be on the floor and all over the wall?

    What could be causing this?

Any help would be appreciated and rep'd.

In the house we rent out, our Maytag Neptune washer was doing the exact same thing. Repairmen came out a few times and there was a specific defect with one of the parts and they replaced it. The third time it was an actual blockage in the drain hose and there was never enough to do anything other than leave the washer with water in it. It could very well be the hose. (Before Swoly chimes in - that's what she said).

If it were the drain line you'd more than likely have water all over the floor and down the wall where there drain is. Had this happen in my last house and the piping was just really old and had to be replaced.

Do you wash any small articles of clothing?

I have a 20 month old and a 5-yr old...so yeah. I just wonder if maybe it's a partial blockage allowing water through, enough that it's not backing up and making a mess...but not enough that it's allowing the washer to get everything out.

    Bobrek...

I'd figure it was the machine if it hadn't happened with 2 completely different washers.

I'm guessing some sort of partial blockage, especially with little clothes. That was the most recent issue with ours.

My sister had a problem with her kids socks getting stuck in the drain pipe going from the machine to the house piping. Happened several times on the same machine and each time water would back up into the machine. Could that be it?

Certainly within the realm of possibility. I'll have to check that tonight.

    THANKS

We had this happen to us a while back. Check your filter on the washing machine. Particularly if you have pets, they can gunked up really quickly.

Our filter got disgusting and caused the pump to malfunction. We had a pretty new GE machine (although just out of warranty), so it was easy to find a replacement pump and install it. That stopped all the washer problems we were having.

I think you just explained the long unanswered question as to why socks are missing after a load :)
