Maybe it's just you? I think Casey and Jacob are the best along with Pia James. All the others are not bad singers though, although I find Paul's voice annoying but I can understand why people like it and I wonder how good Scotty will be once the genre is not country. Karen was the worst of the night for me but her past performances weren't that bad...if I'd have to bet on anyone getting eliminated it would be Naima. She has talent but her voice just isn't strong enough compared to the others. At least not for me.
I agree with this. My favorites are James D (for interpretation, vocals and star power) and Thia (for vocals), all the others didn't leave much of an artistic impression.
My rankings based off last night's performance, from best to worst: 1 - Pia (her last name is Toscano, not James, lol) - there were times when I thought I was actually listening to Celine Dion - that's how good she was! She did miss 2 notes but they were so minor that you would have only known that if you had heard Celine's version multiple times o). I think she will be in the final 3 when it is all said and done. 2 - James - this guy continues to amaze. At first, I didn't think it was quite as good as the Judas Priest song from last week, but the more times I listen to what he did last night, the more I am impressed with his versatility. I think hard rock/heavy metal is still this dude's forte but he showed last night that he can sing anything. He just has to be careful about coming across as obnoxious. 3 - Scotty - I don't like country music and everybody knows that but this guy is a talent and he does a great job of being consistent. He will probably not win but he should become a major star in the country world. 4 - Casey - I love him and everybody knows that but he has done better. He has to be careful that he doesn't start coasting based on his popularity. 5 - Lauren - easily her worst performance so far, she did the best she could with what is actually a tough song. Maybe she needed Mutt Lange like Shania had to "enhance" her voice. Like Thia though, I think she is safe. 6 - Jacob - a lot of people love him and he does have a great voice; but he really did oversing the R Kelly song last night. There were parts of it, to me, that were unlistenable. If he continues to keep doing this, he won't make it to the top 5. 7 - Stefano - maybe not the greatest song choice and/or arrangement but he really put his heart into the performance; took him awhile to get going but he did well - I think he is the best of the 3 wildcards, by far. 8 - Haley - going from Alicia Keys to Leann Rimes (and teenybopper Rimes at that) is quite a jump - have to agree with Randy that the performance was somewhat boring. 9 - Thia - wasn't quite as good as last week but I think she is still safe 10 - Ashthon - she has really grated on me the last 2 weeks; she needed to knock one out of the park and instead gives us some obscure Diana Ross song, WTF? 11 - Paul - if there was any justice in the world, this guy will be gone and soon but there seems to be too many people who like this guy - why, I don't know. 12 - Karen - someone said this last night (on an American Idol website), she sounded like a cruise singer. Very poor song choice here and this performance only vindicates my belief that she did not belong in the top 13 (Kendra or Lauren Turner hello?) 13 - Naima - that really was a trainwreck watching her dance with a bolt of lightning in the background and doing a reggae rap part. Get ready to see the judges use their save on her.
agree with almost all of that Manny. I'd flip Scotty and Stefano based purely on last night's performance (I thought Scotty was ok, not as great as he was last week). I'd also flip Karen and Naima, but that's nitpicking. And on Paul, I think he could be successful...but he only has 1 style that he sounds good doing. And it's softer kinda stuff--not the kinda thing that'll succeed on the show.
A little biased on Stefano who was at best ok last night. You probably don't care for country much but if you did, you would know last night he killed it. 1.Casey Abrams 2. Durbin 3.Pia 4.Scotty
I'm not even sure what this means? Can you label a whole genre of music as simply "overrated". I don't see how. I mean, it's fine to have an opinion, but a mature adult (maybe the thing missing here?) simply says, "country music, not my thing". Which is my stance on it. Country music, not really my thing. But I can appreciate that some people do like it, and that Scotty sang that song very well. Moreover, I think the show last night was pretty strong overall. I lot of interesting, different and frankly good voices. Some stinkers, for sure, but the talent actually DOES seem a lot better than in years past. Casey, Pia, Durbin, Lusk, Scotty - they all both sang great, but each was unique as compared to the other and many were just unique generally, as artists. You can add Paul in there as well, for uniqueness, though I'd agree it was a bad performance for him last night (especially the first half of his song). You did have 2 HORRIBLE performances - Naima and Karen - which seems to be universally agreed. But even those middle performers - Thia, Stefano, Haley, Lauren (who should be better), Ashton, Paul (last night) - have some pretty solid moments. In past years, you'd only really have one or two great singers/performers, and in some seasons you'd have none.
I like country. I was hoping for better out of him. Just my opinion...I thought he had a few pitch issues and was slightly overshadowed by the background at times (i.e. small arrangement issues). I just don't think he was quite as great *last night* as everyone says I also wouldn't have put him at 7--just wanted to flip Manny's rankings easily. Why would I be "biased" on Stefano? Maybe you meant a different word. I'm fine having my own opinion, and no, it's not biased
America [pause for effect] disagrees with you (and the rest of you). Bradley Cooper stays another week. -- Sea-Crest, OUT
Little surprised that Naima wasn't in the bottom 3 but other than that, no surprises. Glad to see that Ashthon is gone - she came across that she had an attitude. It would be hilarious to see Naima and then Stefano get eliminated in the next 2 weeks which would beg the question of why have the wildcard.
well Stefano was the only wildcard that seemed worth it when they did the wildcard thing Either way, I don't think it would make you question it. It's put in there for one last control measure since the public is choosing 10 out of 24...that's a big cut, so it's nice to have some judge overriding before the fans start making single cuts each week (basically, if it didn't mean much this year, that doesn't mean it wouldn't be necessary in another year)
I am glad to see Ashthon gone as well, however, I was kind of hoping she got the save so she could be voted out again next week and be the first contestant voted out 3 times.
After watching the performances again, there is no doubt that James Durbin had the best performance of the night. You could just feel his stuggles in life as he sings. I don't like some of his attitudes but artistically he is my favoriate right now.
I still think they made a huge mistake letting Kendra go. She is not as pretty but just as good of a singer as one of my top 5 idols ever, Kath McPhee.
