Well, the federal government already has a racket at blatant theft. Texas should raise taxes to about 20% to pay for things like education. The U.S. should lower taxes and get rid some welfare programs, cut defense spending, and cut education spending. There is too much duplication between state and federal.

In education spending there is very little duplication. The things like Title I that the govt. spends money on regarding education is not what the state spends its money on.

Serious question: where did you learn this information/hypothesis, and what is your educational background?

Oh yeah, because teachers will perform much better when they're thinking about how they're going to pay their mortgage instead of how they're going to teach little Johnny to read.

Can we fire parents who suck too? Because there's a helluva lot more of them than there are sucky teachers. And it's funny that they are usually the ones who yell the loudest about the teachers...

It's interesting that of the 350 teachers laid off in Humble ISD none of them were football coaches. Because the district definitely needs the assistant to the assistant Left Tackle coach more than that math teacher.

In US America? That's the truth. Might as well be upfront about it. Maybe we should just cancel all non-sports curricula. Could save a lot of money, and let the football players finally FOCUS.

Maybe I missed, but why isn't the alleged rainy day fund being used to cover costs for the short term? Probably all got spent on the governor's mansion.

A $300k salary for a superintendent doesn't seem excessive to me. It's a high leadership position where you want someone with good talent and experience. If that superintendent can find far better money in business, he won't stay with the school district; neither will younger talented people who are choosing whether to stay in education or go work in oil.

I know big college football programs pay for themselves and then some with revenues they bring from games played. Is the same true for high school? If so, you'd be shooting yourself in the foot to fire people who are bringing in the cash.

over half of the funding to A&M comes from research, the other good portion, tuition and the state pays very little. Its considered a public university but in reality its not, and my prof was talking about perry and how the faculty here is going to expereince the layoffs despite all that because of this ****face.

    Nobody likes perry.

That's not how Texans do things, supposedly.

If you disagree, you're obviously not a true Texan.

i don't think HS football generates close to enough revenue to help, actually i think its probably very little considering equipment and stadiums

Well, apparently Perry isn't totally against using the fund now.

So I guess he wants to fire 100,000 teachers, THEN tap into the fund.

Yeah, I wouldn't think so. Have you been to a (Texas) high school football game lately? I mean, I love football as much as....eh, probably a lot MORE than the next guy, but most of these 5A programs have nicer stadiums, newer equipment, and more coaches than a lot of I-AA colleges. The Berry Center is nicer than the stadiums at SHSU or SFA. It's crazy.

Some districts are thinking about charging kids for extra-curricular activities (including football). That sounds good on the surface, but I'd hate for some kid to miss out on a chance to go to college because his parents can't afford to let him play football, march in the band, etc. in order to get a scholarship.
