The draft is heavily weighted with defensive prospects. Based on this alone, there is no reason for us to go offense with the first round pick.
this draft has about 7 top Defensive players (top tier) and the rest are mediocre. That allows some of the Top offensive talent to be available for us where we're picking. We won't be drafting an impact defensive player unless we get very very lucky.
But at the same time, how many of those "top prospects" actually pan out...while others emerge in the NFL as stars. Just bc they arent on the list of top 7 doesnt mean they cant be among the best in their class. It would be a huge mistake to draft anything other than defense in the first round. Until we get our defense to mediocrity, we will have no chance at the playoffs.
I'd rather take the best WR or RB in the draft than the 3rd best CB, OLB or DE. McNair holds the keys to great veteran impact players and great coaches. Too bad he just wants a Love ya Blue reunion.
our rookie db did so well last year! i have no confidence that they'll make the correct pick regardless of what side of the ball they choose.
Mediocre defense was mediocre 2 seasons ago. Wait, we didnt have a running game then. Always one thing or another that's holding this franchise back.
So whats your suggestion? Choosing a defender later in the draft since the odds are better that a 4th round talent will pan out more than a 1st round talent? We need help on defense. You can point your finger at Jackson and Ill point mine at Cushing. Plus, we are talking about the 11th pick here, not the 20th. Trust me, if I know we are going to be aggressive in free agency, Im all for going BPA...but given that we have never, in the history of the Texans franchise, done that...Im not going to choose a WR (since our air attack is among the best in the NFL)...nor am I going to choose a RB (since we had the best RB in the NFL last year, followed with a freshly signed Ward, and a 2nd round RB in Tate that has yet to hit the field).
bpa? my suggestion is to go after defense in free agency. i know that won't happen, so i'm reduced to b****ing about it on a bbs.
My solution is simple...trade up to #4 and take Von Miller. Who cares if we lose a 2nd and 3rd rounder in the process...we get a freak to play OLB. Btw, dude just ran a 4.49 at the Aggie pro day.
Trade down, get another few picks (maybe in future years), use them to shore up depth only, then build up the defense via FREE AGENCY. Time to put the "building through the draft" philosophy on hold for a few years, roll the dice, and try to win NOW for a change.
You have one of the top offenses in the NFL. You fail to make the playoffs two years in a row because of your horrible defense, and you guys are pining to take another offensive player? Give me a break. There are about 10, in my opinion, highly touted defensive play makers. There are also a few offensive players being mocked ahead of us, with Cam Newtown and/or Blaine Gabbert possibly sneaking in there, so we will have our shot at one of the top tier players. But like rezdawg said, nobody is a can't miss, especially in this years draft (aside from maybe Peterson. I would say Bowers, too, but DEs have proven us wrong in the past). What it comes down to is your team's scouting departments (ours hasn't been good, but I have to give Wade a chance). Mock drafts and combine numbers mean jack when people step on the field. Yeah, sometimes they're indicative, but not always. When you're talking someone that's rated number three at a position versus number one (especially in this year's draft), that's just asinine. I'm not advocating a build through the draft philosophy, because I think that's dumb. We need to sign quality veterans or we won't get anywhere. But that doesn't mean that you spend your number one pick on offense when yours is one of the best in the league. Second or third rounders if there's a good value pick? Yeah. But not a first. No way you draft offense first.
I agree with this thinking - with where we are, it's PARAMOUNT we come away with impact players. Adding more Okoyes and Jacksons to the pile doesn't do us a bit of good. You've got: Fairley, Peterson, Dareus, Von Miller, Amukamara, Quinn, Bowers (maybe, DE) After that, you run the risk of wasting your first on a guy that will just add to the untalent pool. If you can trade up, do it. Otherwise, go BPA. There's no way we're filling the needed 5-6 D spots through a draft no matter what. All the pressure is on FA. If we get a stud in the draft, fantastic. But don't fool yourself taking a low rated CB and thinking you've got a problem solved.
You know.....I have a funny feeling that's exactly how all this is going to play out. The problem last year was that we relied too much on an unproven rookie to handle the starting CB duties. Obviously that was a HUGE mistake. So let's fix it.....by DOING IT ALL OVER AGAIN. After all, we now have Bum's son here to coach him up!
while i fully understand why people are angry/disappointed/skeptical etc, I do agree that it gets old how damn depressing a lot of the posters are. I mean, i know the texans have sucked in a lot of ways i guess i havent let it get me to the point where i automatically and immediately poo poo anything the texans do...cup half full vs cup half empty i suppose.
Sometimes, during bad times, morbid humor can be very therapeutic. Kind of reminds me of being an Oiler fan in the early 80's. We were so bad that it was actually kind of fun to make fun of the team. In an odd sort of way, laughing at them actually turned me into a bigger fan. I think I'm experiencing the same kind of thing currently with our beloved Texans.
