Did anyone ever think we would see the day when teachers would have to worry about losing their jobs? That day is here. 350 Humble ISD teachers (not administrators) were laid off 2 weeks ago. Many more teacher (not administrator) layoffs were announced yesterday in Spring ISD. Katy ISD is preparing to lay off a bunch of first year teachers (not administrators). All districts are on a hiring freeze. And this is only the beginning.

But none of this is the Governor's fault because he didn't fire anyone!

We treat education like a discarded cat turd and then wonder why we're so stupid.

The "hey you kids, get off my lawn!" political philosophy triumphs again.

The problem is that the people who treat education that way don't realize they're stupid. Those who respect education are just f***** because they're outnumbered.

Already posted but I'll chime in here too.

Governor good hair ****s the whole state over now and in the future.

It's so outrageous it makes me want to move.

My mother was telling me last night how they already handed out pink slips in CCISD too - some very good teachers...gone.

Why not get rid of public education in Texas? Texas can be the first state to say they do not waste any money on public education!:p

Growing up I was always told the three types of people in society you should have the most respect for are your parents, your grandparents and teachers.

America still has a long way to go.

I have mentioned in other threads that I want to reduce spending at the federal level, but education is one area where there needs to be extra care.

I know the states, counties, cities, and school districts all have budget issues to be resolved. It will take some cuts and some tax increases. While I do not know a lot about the California specifics it looks like Gov. Brown has made a good start there.

It is incredible how Gov. Perry tries to pass the buck. He knows these large cuts require cutting teachers. While I am sure there is some fat to be trimmed in the middle and upper management of the school districts, there is not enough to avoid teacher layoffs with these cuts.

I think the other area that will affect people locally is Medicaid cuts at the state level. Those cuts will just result in more people using the free services of Ben Taub and other hospitals, which will result in Harris County spending more than it anticipates.

A couple months after the election and all of a sudden we have a huge deficit and crippling budget cuts. If Perry and White squared off again today, would Perry still win? (Unfortunately, the answer is probably still Yes. :( )

He's being dishonest about how many expendable positions there are, of course. Teachers are being let go, and there's no way around it. For him to act like "if they fire teachers, it's not my fault, there are plenty of positions that are completely unnecessary to eliminate in order to fix the problem" is just a freaking lie.

A shameful display. Those who voted for him should be ashamed for what he has done to our State. The rest of us just ashamed to be associated with it. So disingenuous.

Someone should detail honestly the progression of his decisions that have gotten us where we are today, and publicize it heavily, because apparently !@#$ing us over and pointing the finger is getting too easy for him.

    His mother should be ashamed.

This unfortunately is one of the many problems of the education system. We pay football and basketball coaches at far greater rates than teachers of equal tenure and credentials. Administrators of large school districts -- and some smaller ones -- make as much or almost as much as the President of the United States.

In short, our funding rationale from top to bottom is completely screwed up. The children, except as potential money-makers for the school and school district (and later a college or university), get shafted every time.

Personally, I'm completely in the teachers' corner. I do believe in easing the difficulty in getting rid of the small percentage of substandard teachers, but that is because they are a liability to their students and they bring their colleagues down in the public's eyes.

Not only do teachers have to struggle with relatively low pay but their job performance is severely hindered by their students' parent(s). Lots of kids change schools frequently because the parents are always on the move (ah, apartment life). I could go on, but I would rather see the actual Clutchfans teachers examine their difficulties more directly.

You can't beat Good Hair - he is untouchable. I don't think there is anything he could do that would get his base upset - as long as his hair is good and he keeps his rhetoric simple minded.

Education should be the last thing to get cut before essential infrastructure and essential military spending.

And as far as quality goes, you only need to do one thing to fix it... make teaching a desirable job. Either through policy or wages, just freaking make it happen and watch how fast things turn around.

If we reduce education, we reduce the chances of our children going to college. And if our kids don't go to college, especially in this day and age where it seems like you need some form of post high school education to make a livable wage, than expect income tax revenue to decrease. We're hurting the deficit more by cutting education.

I wonder how much it cost to put up and take down all that barbed wire from HISD schools?

We should have moved to that voucher system in 2006 but it would have hurt the Dems pockets too much. I would sell off all the government prison/school buildings and move to a pure voucher system.
