The Sheen saga got me thinking about this interestingly enough. love martin sheen in Apocalypse Now one of my favorite darkhorse candidates is Tigerland with Colin Farrel Never was that big a fan of Platoon or full metal jacket but maybe i'm crazy
Love Full Metal Jacket just for the boot camp experience alone. The Killing Fields. The Deer Hunter. We Were Soldiers. Hamburger Hill.
Depends on what you mean by Vietnam movie. If you're looking for just straight action, I'd go with the somewhat underrated Hamburger Hill. It's based on a true story and was very well received by Vietnam veterans for it's realism and authenticity, so you can watch it knowing that it's not just some over-the-top stereotypical shoot 'em up bloodfest. If you're looking for something deeper like how the war affects the human psyche, I'd go with Born on the Fourth of July. As much heat as Tom Cruise takes as an actor, I thought that was a great performance. The part where he tells that guy's parents that he accidentally killed him gets me every time. Full Metal Jacket is one of my favorites, but once they leave bootcamp, the rest is kind of a letdown.
Yeah I know right??? That's how I felt as a kid when I first saw this movie.. I would only watch the bootcamp scene and would never finish it after that up until I got older I finally finished the whole thing and thought it was ok...
Full Metal Jacket for me and unlike most people, I enjoyed the ENTIRE movie, not just the first hour. But then again I am an unabashed Kubrick fan.
The whole movie was good, but you can't deny the dropoff after bootcamp. I think he spent way too long with the sniper plot, but that's kind of Kubrick's style, I guess. I still love the entire movie.
There are some really picky posters in here. By Vietnam War movies I assume everything revolving around the 2nd Indochina War meaning all the countries like Cambodia, Laos, South and North Vietnam. My vote goes to Apocalypse Now (Redux).
Clearly the correct answer is Operation Dumbo Drop. Full Metal Jacket is great, and there are tons of great parts after the bootcamp portion. The hooker scene is classic. The part where Raptorman's camera is stolen. When the sniper pins down the whole squad. Animal Mother. The helicopter door gunner.
I'll admit that Private "Gomer Pyle" Lawrence is the most memorable character but there are still some great characters that you don't meet until the 2nd act, the most obvious being Adam Baldwin's character, "Animal Mother". I also liked how Joker and Rafterman (another character that wasn't in basic training) had to get into a combat situation.
