Yes but...but....but...but Drayton is cheap!!! Seriously, Drayton lost his mind for a good 3-4 year period there but looks like he got his act together again here at the end. Saying that, Drayton was NEVER cheap even in his Uncle D days.
Is there some reason I can't fathom that the front office wouldn't have already called Bengie Molina's agent? I don't think he's going to command that much and would be at least a decent 1 season replacement. There is no way this team could seriously consider Towles a legit mlb candidate, again...could they?
As long as they're not getting personnel advice from Gary "We'll Go With Our Guys" Kubiak, there ain't no reason...
from MLBTR [rquoter] Astros Interested In Jesus Flores The Astros are looking at the Nationals' Jesus Flores as a possible replacement for Jason Castro, reports MLB.com's Bill Ladson. However, the Astros are concerned about the condition of Flores' shoulder. [/rquoter]
I give precisely zero credence to this idea that one can quantify a player with wins. There are far too many "unmeasurables" involved. You do the best you can to assemble the best team you can. K.I.S.S.
This is the guy I'd like to see in an Astro uniform. Still young enough to do some damage but shouldn't cost a fortune to pickup with Wilson Ramos as their #1 guy after Pudge retires. Now, make sure that shoulder is okay because as a catcher shoulder injuries are death sentences.
Not that there is a chance of the Astros doing this. Unless the Yanks are desperate and toss up the farm. http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/yankees/man_to_ad_myers_2nR8nBwN77q8uL2ZmVecUO
Because if it's Q and someone who has only 4 more major league at bats than I do, 78 wins might be a pipe dream?
[rquoter]Reports of Bengie Molina's retirement are premature. The veteran catcher instead appears to be very picky on where he might work for one more season. Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News reports Molina "remains close to his phone" in case a team loses a catcher and offers him enough cash to return. The San Diego Padres seemed like a logical destination after Gregg Zaun surprisingly announced his retirement Monday. The Padres checked in with Molina, according to Marty Caswell, but Caswell tweets that Molina appears uninterested at this time. Molina could be waiting for a job where he might get more playing time. In San Diego, his job would be primarily as a backup to Nick Hundley. [/rquoter]
How about 72 then? I was trying (unsuccessfully it appears) to make two points. First, the Astros are very likely not going to be a playoff team this year. Second, individual players generally do not have a great impact on the team's record. With Castro out for the year, Q becomes C1. Towles or Corporan is currently penciled in as C2. The Astros also could signed a C1 FA for serious $$$ for a single year "rental" like Molina. The signing would not be a difference maker wrt playoffs and Castro next year will regain the C1 spot and the rental player will be given the boot. Given that the Astros are in rebuilding mode, they should be playing the youngsters since they represent the future of the club. Towles (or Corporan) who has no future with the club that I can see would benefit personally from a year at C2 in the bigs. And he might even have trade value in the next off season.
Crap, tough choice. It all depends on what they are offering but Myers seems like a good fit with the Astros.
I'm not saying overspend just for the sake of hiring a C1. If you can get Molina for say $2 mil, why not? It's not breaking the bank and you get someone who isn't a blackhole offensively and is known as a very good defensive catcher. Playing the young guys when the young guys have no business playing does nothing. Towles has had his chances and has proven time and time again that he's nothing more than a AAAA player. Corporan has been in the minors for 8 years and has a career .683 OPS. Whoopee. Let's bring back Max Sapp while we're at it.
First, the author ought to learn the details of Myers contract. He is signed through the 2012 season with a club option for 2013. From the article: "And since his two-year, $23 million contract ($11 million this year) expires after this season (there is a $13 million club option with a $3 million buyout), Myers wouldn't be clogging the lane for the possibility that Manuel Banuelos and Dellin Betances are ready to pitch in the big leagues in 2012. "
I read somewhere that Molina is giving $10 mil per as his figure when people inquire. If that is true, I assume the Astros did inquire, and then had to race to hang up the phone before laughing out loud.
