Should I wait for David Fincher's version coming out this year or go ahead and watch the streaming swedish version currently being shown on Netflix? I've been planning on watching this movie, but now that I know that Fincher has one coming out this year I might wait for that one. How good was the Swedish version? For those that don't know the girl from the beginning of The Social Network is going to be the lead. While I did like her in SN I would have probably preferred Scarlet Johansson. http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2010/aug/17/rooney-mara-dragon-tattoo
Haven't read the book. I think the film probably captures the "Swedish-ness" in the way a Hollywood movie won't. It is maybe a little slower paced and low key than a Hollywood movie, so if you need fast pace and lots of action, you might want to wait. I also don't think Hollywood will be able to make the rape scenes quite as brutal and uncomfortable as the Swedish ones. I've seen the first two films via Netflix streaming and both were worth watching. I haven't watched the third, as I've read some pretty bad reviews of the film version.
Saw the foreign version, great plot, but the lead male actor just didn't look the part, didn't enjoy watching his hidieous face for 2 1/2 hours Spoiler
The books were great, but I haven't watched the movies yet. Now that I know they're on Netflix streaming I'll be checking them out soon.
i watched all 3 and didnt think much of them. they werent bad but there was nothing extraordinary about them. i guess i was expecting La Femme Nikita but got something akin to a real life simple investigation and then slow court room. Sleepers had a similar storyline but not as anti-climatic
I watched the Swedish ones with US subtitles and enjoyed it immensely. I fear that the wimp censors won't make it as brutal and graphic in the remake, but I'm hopeful.
ScarJo would be terrible casting. Wasp is supposed to be a tiny girl (under 5') who is extremely flat chested. They need to get someone like that who is willing to get implants for the sequels.
I thought the first film was enjoyable, but it was essentially a basic murder-mystery movie. Just imagine you're watching a long episode of Murder, She Wrote... except that the edgy loose cannon that is Angela Lansbury is replaced with a tame and boring goth lesbian instead. I watched the sequel and regretted it. It starts to get into the realm of the ridiculous. Without getting into any spoilers, the culprits/criminals get too much of a wacky villain treatment. I couldn't suspend my disbelief anymore and spent most of the time watching the sequel rolling my eyes and groaning. My friend watched the third one fully aware that the story would probably continue to suck in hopes of catching another gratuitous lesbian love scene. His efforts were in vain. My suggestion: Watch the first one if you're interested.
There's another popular crime thriller trilogy called Red Riding. It was a UK 3 part tv miniseries, and very well done. Haven't seen the millenium trilogy, so I can't say how similar the two are.
It isn't Fincher I'm worried about. I'm worried about the studio heads trying to appeal to the teen audience by making it PG-13 and toning down the sex and violence. This is the girl playing Lisbeth: Spoiler Meh. We'll see how she looks after a haircut and multiple tattoos/piercings.
I haven't seen The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo but might check it out sometime. Just wanted to plug another Scandinavian movie that was remade in the US. Insomnia, the original starred Stellan Skarsgard and was set in a town above the Artic Circle in Norway while Christopher Nolan did a remake set in Alaska with Al Pacino. The remake is good but the original is much better and for a movie that is set in continuous daylight really gets creepy.
