Every decade has it's own unique sound and bands that immediately come to mind when you think of that particular period. What bands and sound will be the legacy of the 2000's?

For whatever reason Interpol is always the first band I think of when the 2000's come up -- particularly this song. It's a bit unusual I think - because it's more of a retro 80's sound than a unique style all it's own. The defining sound of Hip hop/ rap was coming out of Houston (IMO), but it faded fast after it's peak and seemed non-existent and the end of the decade.

    Thoughts/ opinions?

If you go back to the 1960s/1970s/1980s and look at the top hits, you'll probably see a load of crap mixed in with the greats. We have selective memory when it comes to the defining songs of a generation.

Really though, depends on what you're into. Lately, I'm noticing a trend towards orchestral mixes and cross-genre mixing, which I personally think are great. I really think the sound of the 2000s is going to be the sound of experimentation and custom music, as the spread of YouTube, the increasing popularization of DJing and the widespread provenance of editing apps made it easy for the whole world to create beautiful pieces. I'd submit the following for consideration---

    <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/2IisL7uwZWg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/omGPlcQ5XfU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/tScMNDW96Us" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

As for a original 2000s song that I hope will stand the test of time---

MGMT's "Kids" is the one. I have given this a lot of thought.

No way - she just started getting popular in '09-ish, right?

My vote goes to Kanye - he's been at it in the mainstream since 2003.

In 2004 I would have said it was going to be Missy Elliott/Timbaland. They have sort of receded into the background over the last few years.

Probably the Black Eyed Peas, corporate hip hop at it's finest.

    Lady Gaga's disco says ...
    • The Fame (2008)
    • The Fame Monster (2009)
I don't pay much attention to mainstream music, but from what little I do hear Lady Gaga is border line overexposed.

Interpol is 80s revival, which is a big theme these days. Bands like LCD Soundsystem, Cut Copy, etc all have a distinct "80s" style feel to them. Sort of like a conglomeration of more art rock lyrics infused with synth beats and delay effects.

Good call on "Kids" though. I think that song is one of the most iconic songs of the 2000s. Also would throw Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" in there, along with The Killers "Mr. Brightside".
