Were it me (and I'm mulling over whether to get one, or not), I'd get the most recent model. I've always regretted buying an iPhone that was replaced by an upgrade less than 3 months later. The new iPad (based on early reviews, not just Apple propaganda) is clearly much faster, perhaps twice as fast, and has much better graphics, besides being thinner, lighter, of more solid contruction, and the two cameras. If you're thinking of getting the next iPad, the iPad 3, and you can't imagine wanting to upgrade again in a year or so, then getting the original iPad would make sense to me.

There is a reason it is as cheap as it is.

Apple is probably going to stop issuing updates for the device after a year (making it outdated).

There will probably be many games/apps released built to utilize the power of the new dual core processor (which won't run smooth on the previous generation device). Also 256MB of RAM is pretty low especially since iOS now has multitasking (or some form of multitasking).

Personally I think if you want an iPad, shell out the extra $100 and get the new one (maybe wait a couple of months and buy it used to close the gap a little bit). It will be relevant for at least 2 years as opposed to 1 and it would run smoother (since the interals are alot better).

Its pretty much a toy. Nothing more. Great for playing games, watching video, reading e-books. It looks alot better on a large screen than it does on a tiny phone.

It isn't supposed to rival against laptops/smartphones. It isn't a productivity device. If you want a toy, then it is worth considering.

Only tablet I'd ever consider is the Flyer since 7" is portable and the stylus looks nifty.

Completely agree. They have great functionality for some people, but the majority have them for bragging rights. It reminds me of many people who pay $30 a month for a smart phone simply to update their twitter or facebook status.

I'd check into the motorola Xoom.

I use mine to VPN and use RDC to access my work computer and actually be productive. I also use it as an E-Reader for a number of manuals I have to carry around. It CAN BE a productivity device. While on customer sites and using my laptop on their network, i use it to access our company's network when I don't have split tunnel VPN access.

To imply it is only a "toy" is incredibly disingenuous.

    Fine I retract my statement.

It is alot more efficient on the go than a laptop (not really a true replacement tho).

And if you are somebody who needs to access multiple networks, it probably is a better option.

Guess it really depends on the person and the usage. If I had one, my main purposes would be to use it as a toy.

This is the mindset Apple wants you to think, but they aren't a monopoly. You have options. I wouldn't worry too much about games because App developers want the largest market possible. For every Epic Citadel, you'll have 50 other games that run fine on a regular first gen iphone.

I would think the App releases would be something like 1:5:50 for dual core:A9 cortex: original iphone processor.

Pardon me, sir. There no such think as Forthedederpded.:(:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

For web surfing, watching flicks and the like, and writing, tossing an iPad that weighs less than 1.5 pounds and a plastic keyboard (a few ounces) into a bag is about as easy as it gets. I have a netbook and am not crazy about it. I'd much rather do the iPad/keyboard thingy. Plus, the screen is spectacular compared to any netbook I've seen, not to mention the difference in software.

You should have bought an ultra portable laptop then. A netbook is just a cheap laptop.

Shhh. Don't let people know you CAN actually be productive with an iPad. Apple haters don't want to hear about all the cool stuff you can do. Don't let your reality get in the way of their delusions and hatred.

$200-$250 is the sweet spot for me. I'll wait until then. I do plan on using it to flash people messages as I drive, like 'LEFT LANE FOR PASSING ONLY- ITS THE LAW IN TEXAS', the speed limit in reverse so people in front of me can see it in their mirror, etc.

If I wanted one I would definitely get a new one. The lack of a super rounded back makes it look less r****ded and video chatting is important to me for keeping in touch with family.
